It would be helpful to watch the whole thing in order to cast an informed vote.

Basically, Rand Paul uses Fauci's own testimony, a paper from one of the Wuhan virologists stating that the research was being funded by NIH, and the NIH's own definition of "gain of function" to make the case that Fauci lied.

Fauci defended himself by saying that Dr. Paul does not know what he is talking about and he is the one who is lying (effectively, "nuh-uh").

Paul nails Fauci on something more profound: funding gain-of-function research that did not escape from Wuhan lab, though was proceeding with Chinese military assistance and approval since long before 2011, funding an experienced, already-in-process, gain-of-function lab.

To have funded a single dime to Wuhan Institute, from 2003-2021, especially with its military ties, was by default to fund gain-of-function research. Yes i know. I read over it. Nothing alluding to gain of function in the abstract. In fact, it wasn't what they were doing. They were basically trying to build a sars family tree.

Repeating Rand's claim isn't support for it. And i am not seeing support for his claims in that paper. They weren't developing gain of function for new viruses. They used a gain of function to speed up the experiment, not to develop new viruses. Nor were they developing gain of function techniques (an acceptable form of which is used in every virus lab on Earth, apparently). So no, it was not funding of gain of function research.

Basically...stop me if you've heard this one... Rand doesn't know what the hell he is talking about.

The paper discusses how they modified bat viruses which could not previously infect humans, enabling them to infect humans.
