He's trying to keep Congress from screwing everything up so they institute socialism.
He knows, and so does anyone who has lived in a socialist country, that socialism is going to ruin this country.

Socialist countries cannot be pure socialists. They have to have capitalism to create jobs and incentive.
The kind of socialism Democrats want leans more towards communism.
They will take over businesses and utilities and tell us how warm we can keep our homes during the Winter....and tell us to start walking. They will make it too expensive to own a car.
The Green New Deal should have been a red flag to anyone with half a brain.
College kids don't have anything of their own....so they welcome it.

You're describing welfare. Socialism is the nationalization of industry. Trump hasn't pushed to nationalize a single business. Cheaper, better healthcare for all doesn't even necessitate that he was describing a government run system.

Someone who's against economic authoritarianism points out that socialism has always failed, and socialists inevitably line up to claim that those examples weren't real socialism, generally because the famously failed socialist states of the 20th century still allowed some degree of private ownership. True socialism wouldn't have been half assed, and allowed the capitalist class to screw everything up that the central planners might've achieved.

But then, when they're trying to describe how awesome socialism is to a dubious electorate, it's always, "Socialism is just like, free education and health care for everybody! Doesn't that sound great?"

Anyway, I can't hold you personally responsible for this lack of consistency, perhaps you're not one of these no-true-Scotsman Marxists, and perhaps your views on this loose, welfare-state definition of socialism are totally consistent with your general outlook.
