Poverty in the Ozarks

It's OK. Republicans aren't racist when it comes to poor people. They hate all poor people equally. Even poor Republicans hate poor people. Go figure.

Undeniable proof of that is in how they vote.

Against themselves.

Two out of every five Greene County families with children under age 18 live in poverty, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. It jumps to nearly half when the family has a child under age 5.
Poverty in America is not something that only affects inner city minorities.

In other countries, we would call this an "emerging market".

Here, they're just servants to the 1%.

Again...Greene County is dominated by Springfield, MO.

Did you get that?

FOURTH most populous county in Missouri.

Missouri, which contains all of St. Louis and the lion's share of Kansas City.

For the cheap seats...cities = poverty.

Hard to believe appalachia is so poor. They're mostly under republican rule and they don't have none of those liberal labor unions interfering in their lives.

You are, of course, aware that Ozarks and Appalachians are not interchangeable, that they are two distinct mountain ranges....right?

And their political flavor varies by county...there are both dems and republicans in the Ozarks.

Because clearly you know what's in our best interests and we don't.

Did it ever occur to you that we vote against you because you are wrong?

No kidding. They're gonna help the shit out of those poor country folk, whether those poor country folk want help or NOT.

This is how wars begin.

Over here in McDonald county thangs ain't all chandeliers and caviar....

I here ya. Had if been Ralls or Hickory or Douglas Counties, I wouldn't argue.

But, while part of the Ozarks, Greene County is atypical, being a mostly urban county.

Evidently the surrounding farming and mountain communities weren't poor enough to highlight "poverty in the Ozarks".

They needed the misery only an urban environment could deliver.

Yes, for I lived and owned a business in the Ozarks, where wealthy people owned second homes on the 90 mile, Lake of the Ozarks. The locals were doing well and prosperously, also.

They need help, dammit. If they don't realize it, Esmeralda suggests we *teach* them to recognize what they're missing.

yeah, a lot of folks work in Branson, Mo, and drive there from Greene county since land and homes around Branson are expensive, the area follows rivers and lakes and it's higher for recreational or lakefront property. The area was hit hard by the last recession, and wages are much lower around the Ozarks..
