In other words, "You can't have federal funds for new police cars unless you stop giving welfare to illegals" probably won't fly.

Quite right. But you miss the point entirely. Banning illegals caused economic losses... because nobody wants to do those jobs.

You don't have a point. The economic loss was avoidable.

Naw, I'm a pragmatist. There are some jobs Americans won't do.. period. No matter how much you pay them. There are people who are willing to come here who will. Now, sensible immigration reform, they come in, do the work, go home when they are done, or can apply for residency if they want. Simple, no?

Both parties have advocated this, but they keep cowering to the nativists who live in mortal fear their daughter might date a Mexican.

The whole point of hiring illegals is to avoid paying them, avoid paying taxes etc. They can put the migrants in inadequate housing with an inadequate water supply. Americans cannot do seasonal work on a farm for little money and raise a family or get ahead. That's why they don't do it.

Your "sensible" reform is to maintain the status quo. The sensible thing to do is to get the damn visas. It really is that simple.

Fifty years ago you might have had an argument against "nativists" who were afraid their daughter might date a Mexican. You don't have that anymore. That number is rather small. They may be vocal on the boards but out in the real world the population doesn't much give a damn.
