To build and maintain our nations roads wouldn't the alternative to a per-mile tax be to keep raising the current gasoline tax as the proportion of electric cars and trucks continually increases?

Not necessarily.

You can just pay for those roads out of the general fund and make those revenues from federal taxes as they do virtually everything else. It is how it should work in the first place - the amount of gas you use is actually quite fluid in relation to how much you use public infrastructure. You could even move the tax over to the sale of the vehicle itself though I think it should just be rolled into the standard tax system.

Further, tracking mileage or other metrics for taxing road usage is inherently inefficient and difficult. The very idea is rather asinine. At least with fuel taxes there is a common point, the sale of the fuel, that is not only simple but is already tracked for other tax purposes. Paying to ensure mileage is traced to lay taxes is asinine is an extreme way.

The only reason this is becoming an issue is that the government is waking up to the fact that they have been actively advocating against the primary source of income for road maintenance and they cannot have tax revenues decrease - that is sacrilegious.

These individual tax schemes need to go the way of the dinosaur. The government costs X to run. The solution is to come up with a single and fairly simple tax scheme to collect the funds to run the government and adjust that as needed. I do not need 1000 hidden taxes attached to every action I may or may not take so the government can pretend it does not take half of every dollar I may earn.

These mileages once in single, or barely double digits have increased to twenty or even thirty miles per gallon in cars. And even heavy trucks which once struggled to get five miles per gallon of diesel now get nearly double that.

So cars are using less fuel to cover more miles. But the wear and tear on the roadways has not changed. It has increased. Chewing up the roads and wearing out bridges.
