That ball was already rolling. You could have packed both houses of Congress full with Tea Partiers in 2008-2010 and the Great Recession still would have hit. The difference is they never would have approved a proper stimulus package, and so things would have gotten much worse.

You're missing the point. Presidents do not have control over gas prices. The United States has something like 2% of the world's oil reserves. Nothing the president did or didn't do can sway the price of oil per barrel.
