Revolutionary: Germany Builds A Solar City That Produces Four Times More Energy Than It Consumes

But a city in the heart of Germany has achieved something more incredible. The Solar cities of Germany:
The Sonnenschiff and Solarsiedlung cities located in Freiburg, Germany are modern, planned habitations that were worked upon with solar power in mind. Literally meaning Solar Ship and Solar Village, the Sonnenschiff and Solarsiedlung cities were specifically designed and built to be solar cities, balancing size, accessibility, green space, and solar exposure. Each of the fifty-two homes along with some commercial buildings is fitted with large rooftop solar panels that double-up as sun shades. The panels are perfectly aligned to point in the right direction of the sun, and the buildings follow the Passivhaus standards of green building technology.
The cities have been designed by architect Rolf Disch. Together with the latest photovoltaic technology for the panels that make them highly efficient, and use of phase-change materials and vacuum insulation for the walls of the buildings that provide optimum thermal performance, the cities are able to generate four times the power which they consume.

Who says it can't be done?

If you aren't worried about cost, you can do lots of stupid stuff. So what?
 
As long as it is not public money, there is no problem. Solar funding has been cut some years ago. Those who could afford shiny solar panels, got them with funding of the working class. And those who could not afford shiny solar panels, had to pay a remarkable share of the costs through tax.

170 residents living in 59 houses is called a city? The article is nothing more than propaganda, the citizens of this city use gas in their cars, to get to and from work, and the water they use in their homes is pumped to them, hence the city is not self-sufficient, it relies on other energy sources to deliver it's water, which cancels out the tiny amount of Solar being produced once in awhile while the sun is at its peak.
 
I think Solar is actually increasing the use of Coal in Germany, how is that so?

Germany's decision to shut its nuclear plants means that back-up for its massive investment in intermittent new renewables needs to be from coal and gas, which will create an extra 300 million tonnes of CO2 to 2020 from increased fossil fuel use. That will virtually cancel out the 335 Mt savings intended to be achieved in the entire European Union by the 2011 Energy Efficiency Directive from the European Commission. But Energiewende locks Germany into long-term dependence on lignite and black coal for dispatchable capacity, contrary to a major aspect of the popular sentiment driving that policy, and its predecessors.
