There are numerous translations and some who take it literally and some who dont.
The god of the old testament was genocidal maniac who killed women and children. Read the bible and see how young girls were molested, offered for sacrifice, or offered to old men to appease gods will. It also sanctions taking women as slaves, raping them, etc.
