Protein is necessary. The food pyramid doesn't make people fat. Over processed convenience foods and fast foods on every corner do. People are too busy to cook, or they're doing the easy thing. People tend to do the easier thing when it's available. You want to get rid of frozen meals and Hamburger Helper, seasoned rice in a microwaveable pouch, beef stew in a can? They're even selling mashed potatoes in the dairy aisle, crappy meals in the deli counter. What do you mean, the government is in charge of nutrition? They don't do my menu planning.putting the government in charge of nutrition is what led to one third of Americans being morbidly obeseGrowing children with developing brains need good nutrition. Just hoping all parents will provide it doesn't work as a policy. I hear your objection, but the problem isn't the kids and they shouldn't have to suffer for it...it just promotes people to not have any financial or familial responsibility = the kids grow up the same = cycle continues
The government puts out its food pyramid and subsidizes meat egg and dairy farmers all in a bid to get people to eat that stuff. The Standard American Diet is a direct result of not only the government but of the big money from the meat and dairy industries who own the politicians who then give them subsidies
and who do you think chooses the "free" meals handed out by government institutions like schools?
There you go repeating the government line.
You don't have to eat animals to get protein. Where do you think grazing animals get all the protein to make the muscle tissue you eat?
Dairy products are shielded from market forces by subsidies keeping them cheap and keeping the dairy industry rich. But you don't see those subsidies for fresh veg and fruits do you?
That is the government manipulating the public to buy what they want them to buy so as to keep the people who own them rich.
