Socialism threads bandwagon

Socialism is guaranteed income by the government. Socialism is healthcare for everyone that should work but don't. Socialism is free food for people that won't work but are able.

That is about as close as anyone has come to giving a definition, thanks for doing that.

Is it socialism to give farmers money not to plant crops?
Nope. That's business subsidy. Is it socialism to bail out a car company going broke because they gave in to union demands and kept people employed that they don't need and pay people for doing little work?

Is a business subsidy not a tool of socialism? It is done to influence the means of production and the price of goods.
Nope. People are working. Socialism is giving money to people that don't or won't work.

That is your definition, but not really the text book definition. Also, farmers are paid not to work (i.e. not to plant crops on their land).

Is unemployment socialism? since the people getting it are not working?

While I do not disagree, I do not think that our founding fathers could have ever imagined that our country would be as large and diverse as it is.
I have not heard a good argument that excuses the usurpation and expansion of government power. If our nation is so large and diverse that liberty is subordinate in focus, the union needs to dissolve.

that well might be the case. Does there come a time when we are too large and too diverse to remain "united"...and are we already there.

Yes, and yes.

We were too large and too diverse in 1860.

The problem is that the authoritarians do not want self-determination. They will not give an inch, so we are left with a forced union that will take blood to rescind.

AND, they are trying their motherfucking best to remove our ability to resist.

It's good for business; Therefore, it can't be socialism.. Socialism isn't good for business.

As far as I'm concerned all the things you're bringing up are socialist in nature, and I oppose them. But I don't really care what they're called.

Liberals and progressives have convinced themselves that the only reason people don't like their big government programs is because Fox News told them that the programs are socialism.

"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Give a man a welfare check, section 8 housing, a free cellphone, plus food stamps he can buy beer with, and he’ll vote Democrat for the rest of his life."

I gave a Democrat a fish and he ate for a day. I taught a Democrat how to catch fish, and he stole my damn boat.

Exactly. Which is why we can't indulge socialism. The more diverse a society becomes, the more important liberty becomes.

Well, when those people are parroting FoxNews almost word for word sometimes, it is hard not to think that.

Thought I would jump on the theme of the week.

In a couple other threads on socialism there is some disagreement on which countries are currently socialist. Some say Canada is, some say it is not for example.

So, in your view what counties in the world today are socialist countries.

Let’s see if we can come up with a list most agree on.

Alright being serious I would list Norway, Finland and Sweden as Socialist Nations.

Does anyone disagree?

Is it good for business? How does keeping the cost of milk artificially low and paying the dairy farmers up to 70% of their income good for business? Keeping the cost of milk artificially low has driven 1000s of dairy operations out of business, thus giving people fewer choices and consolidating the herds under a few large operations. In my neck of the woods the drought caused the price of hay to almost double, and since the cost of milk is kept artificially low even more small operations went under.

I am not sure if liberty and a large yet unified society can co-exist.

I disagree. They all follow the Nordic model. It is not socialist.

The Nordic model refers to the economic and social policies common to the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Sweden). This includes a comprehensive welfare state and collective bargaining at the national level with a high percentage of the workforce unionized while being based on the economic foundations of free market capitalism.[1][2][3] The Nordic model began to earn attention after World War II.

I think in the way the word is used today, you are correct. They do not fall under the more traditional definition of state owned means of production, but they would fall under what is labeled as socialism in our country today.

Do you think people are going to pay $10 for a gallon of milk? That's what socialist countries pay for it.

I think the price of milk should be set by what the free market determines it should be. I do not think it is the place of the central government to manipulate such prices, because that is text book socialism.

Why not have the government just set price control for every thing if it is such a good thing for milk?

Why not make the price of my next car or that new 60" TV artificially low?

Well under the real definition it would be more like China or Cuba but the reality is Cuba fall more under North Korea model of a single party Dictatorship.

No country truly practices pure Socialistic Statehood in my opinion but many countries incorporate Socialistic Policies.
