Southwest airlines pilot Tammy Jo is a hero!!!

You know, after I saw this and heard that a woman was almost pulled through the window, I'm gonna rethink my stand on window seats as well.

Hawaii Air Lines ruined first class for me when I saw the roof get torn off of it's first class section of the jet.

Now window seats? Guess I'm gonna have to start driving or taking a train.

To Hawaii? Good luck with that! :113:

Looks like I’m going to have less competition for the window exit seat over the wing.

...not that big of a deal....pilots train just for this sort of thing...the plane can fly on one engine...it just seems big because it doesn't happen much

It isn’t just about the engine. There was damage to the aircraft which was causing instability issues. And she had to get them down safely to 10,000 feet due to decompression quickly, so they would have enough oxygen, and she could bring it in. She also called for flaps 5, which normally flaps 30 is used, due to instability issues. They had no idea how damaged the plane was or wasn’t.

Southwest flight 1380: The latest on the engine explosion that killed one - Philly -
When the engine explosion caused a window to break and left Jennifer Riordanpartially hanging outside it, a man in a cowboy hat and a firefighter pulled her back inside, according to USA Today. The newspaper identified the cowboy as Tim McGinty and the firefighter as Andrew Needum.

A retired nurse than tried to resuscitate Riordan, McGinty said. After the plane landed, she was taken to an area hospital, where she died Tuesday afternoon...

...FBI to collect parts of plane that fell to ground
The FBI is assisting the National Transportation Safety Board in collecting pieces of the Southwest Airlines jet that fell to the ground when the plane’s left engine exploded in the skies over Pennsylvania on Tuesday

One team has been sent to recover the metal cowl that surrounds the engine that landed in a field on state game land in Bernville, Berks County, about 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

The instability issues were caused by only one engine with the other one just being a big barn door out there with weight and drag....no longer providing thrust. Thank the gods no fuel or hydraulic lines were cut....that would have REALLY been bad.

obviously the plane was fine to fly and land--that's what they usually do
--it's not that amazing
amazing is landing an airplane in a RIVER--and everybody lives--that's amazing

Yes. Very fortunate.

She was also told by crew that plane parts were missing. In such a situation they do not have time to go inspect what is being seen, either. They just have to remain calm and get the plane down safely.

About 15:30 she tells the controller part of the aircraft is missing.

Commercial pilots have stated what she did was amazing. I prefer to believe them.

Were they flying at 30,000 feet?
Each circumstance is unique in its own way. And it takes an amazing skill level to get a damaged plane down safely. Anyone think not, is just fooling themselves.

''were they flying at 30,000 feet''?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????!!!!!!!!!???????!!
yes and the small problem of getting POUNDED by FLAK/MACHINE GUNS!!! !!!!!!
no computers/no fly-by-wire/
no heated/air conditioned cockpits like today--and --as you can clearly see---NO heat in some of those cockpits because they have large holes blasted in the B17s

instruments and controls blasted to hell
look at those pictures!!! controls/etc shot to hell!! Tails shot to hell
this lady pilot still had all her controls

this lady comes nowhere close to these pilots
it she is amazing, these WW2 pilots are GODS

Look, it is you that wishes to not give credit where credit is due. Fine, be my guest.

Just hope you are never on a plane with an uncontained engine failure, in which the pilot is not at the top of their game.

o bullshit--I just showed 17 planes blown to hell--a lot worse--a lot worse-- than the jet plane and theB17s made it back
I'm not impressed by this pilot
now if she landed in a river--sure
if the plane was torn up like the B17s, sure
they train for this sort of thing- 1 engine out
the others didn't train for the plane being torn to hell

Not bad flying for a female pilot

She didn’t cry or anything
