It depends on when he was saying it (and if that's why he was really fired and not for porking a grad student or retracting a paper due to plagiarism or something along those lines). If he's not doing his job of teaching and instead just spends all his time on conspiracy theories, then it's a good fire. I mean, if I sign up for US History to 1865 and instead of discussing the Civil War just goes on and on about Sandy Hook, then as a student he isn't really teaching me the course material I'm paying for.

Right or wrong regarding his conspiracy theory, he's entitled to voice his opinion and a college should stand up for the freedom of speech. The college made the wrong decision.

I am skeptical of "millions". The guy thinks the San Bernadino attack was staged. Along with Boston, Sandy Hook and mass casualty attacks in general. He sent a certified letter to the parents of a Sandy Hook victim asking for proof their child existed. He should never have gotten the job in the first place.

It seems that Tracy was fired for comments made personally to one of the parents of a victim of Sandy Hook. As his notice of Proposed Discipline was served less than a week after those parents went public with their claim. The United Faculty of Florida union didn't seem to have a problem with it.

He'd be apparently caught using the school's equipment and school time for his Sandy Hook blog as well. That may have also contributed to it. He admitted to using university resources outside of work on the 14th....and was served with a Notice of Proposed Discipline on the 16th.
