Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that an electric car with about 200 miles per charge and a price of under $40,000 should be released in three to four years.

The next direction for the electric car company will be making their product more affordable. Musk said that while the Model S is a great car, it is only available at a luxury price point. Furthermore his opinion on Nissan’s electric car, the Leaf, is that it is not up to par, saying the vehicle is “cheap, but it’s not great”.

Tesla has been in the news quite a bit recently. The company wowed spectators when it paid off its $465 million loan from the Department of Energy last week, nine years earlier than expected. It was also recently the centerpiece of a controversy in North Carolina, where state legislators are proposing a bill that would effectively ban Tesla from selling cars in the state because it sells directly to customers online, which some think gives the company an unfair advantage.
