Here's the point flac...it didn't "start" with Trump....strictly speaking. But Trump ELEVATED it to a new and unprecedented level of cruelty and THAT is on HIS head. It wasn't the ONLY solution. It wasn't the ONLY way of dealing with a problem that was ALREADY declining (illegal immigration was at a 50 year low) - so WHY did he do it? WHY did he go after asylum seekers? Don't tell me that most of them were "abusing" the asylum system. Claiming asylum is a legal right both under federal and international law. And, in addition - MOST are declined and deported. So "abusing" it is kind of laughable.

So why did Trump decide to do this?

And how can you excuse what is an absolutely cruel and inhuman policy that is applied to asylum seekers and illegal immigrants both.

I won't go off topic here. But it IS a teachable moment in terms of the OP.. Have you considered that you just never HEARD of the abuses, saw the kids in cages, had the numbers pounded into you or KNEW about the magnitude of the problem because the MEDIA you rely on just didn't want to embarrass the Obama Admin? I KNEW about it. I knew of MANY courts cases and I've given these to you about abuse of children and families in detention. I GAVE you links to many of those suits going back to 2013. And I GAVE you the Bernie announcement from 2016 hitting on the Obama Admin for "separating families" right in the fucking title.

You ignore all this. Because it wasn't on your radar. It takes MEDIA COVERAGE to put it there. And "they" chose not to cover it and bury it. The media has been rotting for LONG time now. Going back to the 2000 election. And you're being USED to get selectively outraged when IT SERVES A POLITICAL GOAL.

Believe it or not I was VERY AWARE of the surge of unaccompanied minors that crossed the border during Obama's Administration. It might shock you but it WAS reported in depth in the news that I listen to (the same NPR you disparage). I remember the people angrily surrounding bus' of kids with signs telling them to "go home" and get out of America. I remember Christian churches denouncing it and rallying to support these kids. I remember reports of overcrowded facilities ill prepared for the UNPRECEDENTED numbers of unaccompanied kids. So YES it was in the news flac.

But here is the difference. THAT situation was unprecedented and not caused by US - we had to deal with it. The situation today is a DIRECT result of a NEW policy enacted by the Trump administration. Can you even see that? Or - is this another free pass because today's crisis was s100% preventable!
