The commission will create recommendations "intended to serve as a best practices guide for state and local election officials to improve voters' experience at the polls under their existing election laws."

Can anyone tell me the Constitutional role of the federal government in elections other than to make sure no laws are discriminatory.

Here's the Executive Order. The commission is advisory in nature only, has no power to change, circumvent or usurp state laws and will cease to exist in 7 months.

And, yes the federal government has a role to play in elections by the Voting Rights Act of 1965, subsequent legislation and Supreme Court rulings.
