The 'General Welfare' thread

The truth is without owners, workers and customers there is no USA. The USA has decided that because of the fact that not everyone is capable of competing and there aren't enough jobs to have anything close to full employment that there needs to be a system where a minimum of survival has to be provided.

The govt has far reaching powers to do what is needed to ensure the common welfare of our nation, and regardless of what you on the right say, the poor and helpless are still a part of this nation.

And until someone comes up with a way to provide them with another way it will stay this way.

You obviously don't know this, so I'll enlighten you... we are the government. Therefore we do what we say we'll do. And, in case you haven't noticed, we are getting increasingly tired of taking care of more and more people for no reason other than they've been sold on this notion that they're owed something by some made-up bogeymen called "the rich".

What a load of shit, to what end other than to encourage incompetence and misappropriation of other peoples money. If anyone other than the Government tried this shit, they end up in jail. Take the hint, the one thing the Government won't tolerate is competition in fleecing the masses.

That's not the problem in my opinion. The problem seems to be this mess of a health care bill that is going to take us into bankruptcy. We simply can't afford it. Obama and Pelosi took money from Medicare right when the baby boomers are ready to retire. That's insane.

Are you nuts, the health care bill put us in trouble? They haven't even put much of it into work yet. Not to mention that our Health care cost are double what they are in any other country yet we aren't even close to the top for taking care of all our people.

The truth is GREED is what makes the system go around, but now after years of the greedy using their wealth to take over our govt, it has now put us into a system where the top has nobody standing in their way of further GREED.

The truth is those who choose to go after greed believe that only they are deserving in this world and all others only deserve what they are willing to allow them to have.

Health care is a big problem, but the health care bill is not.

WHO THE FUCK IS WE? and yes when there is only so much to go around the country (US) ain't going to let you form a hierarchy at the top who has everything made off the land that we all own, not just the rich.

You dumb ass, what the hell do you think the very rich have been doing for ever and never going to jail for it. The collapse of the banking, the collapse of the stock market, the theft of trillions from common people yearly and transferred to the rich.

WE are those that pay taxes...and watch as Gubmint spends our sweat equity foolishly on those that refuse to lift a finger as they demand to HAVE just because of a birthright...(Being BORN here)...

Ain't happening.

The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State.

The operations of the federal government will be most extensive and important in times of war and danger; those of the State governments, in times of peace and security. As the former periods will probably bear a small proportion to the latter, the State governments will here enjoy another advantage over the federal government. The more adequate, indeed, the federal powers may be rendered to the national defense, the less frequent will be those scenes of danger which might favor their ascendancy over the governments of the particular States.

If the new Constitution be examined with accuracy and candor, it will be found that the change which it proposes consists much less in the addition of NEW POWERS to the Union, than in the invigoration of its ORIGINAL POWERS. The regulation of commerce, it is true, is a new power; but that seems to be an addition which few oppose, and from which no apprehensions are entertained. The powers relating to war and peace, armies and fleets, treaties and finance, with the other more considerable powers, are all vested in the existing Congress by the articles of Confederation. The proposed change does not enlarge these powers; it only substitutes a more effectual mode of administering them. The change relating to taxation may be regarded as the most important; and yet the present Congress have as complete authority to REQUIRE of the States indefinite supplies of money for the common defense and general welfare, as the future Congress will have to require them of individual citizens; and the latter will be no more bound than the States themselves have been, to pay the quotas respectively taxed on them. Had the States complied punctually with the articles of Confederation, or could their compliance have been enforced by as peaceable means as may be used with success towards single persons, our past experience is very far from countenancing an opinion, that the State governments would have lost their constitutional powers, and have gradually undergone an entire consolidation. To maintain that such an event would have ensued, would be to say at once, that the existence of the State governments is incompatible with any system whatever that accomplishes the essental purposes of the Union.

Until the Court gave it self the Power to nullify any force or reason that opposed it through Dictate, Federalism had a real chance.

The rich will fight you all the way on anything that is done to change health care and make it better. Tell me or us what this angry to act finally is, what have you done to make it better, what have you done to stop the growth of profits that add cost to our people, yet they don't don't take care of any problems on making health care better or covering more people except under the New Health care.

i have more issues than providing TANF Welfare for those in need or even the few that scam the system....

like the fed funding a statue of thor for alabama.... oil and gas subsidies given to corporations, agriculture corps, corporations incorporating themselves in bermuda via a PO box there, companies like the governor of florida's medicare fraud....8 billion being missing in iraq, paying military industrial complex companies for things they failed to provide....

THE FRAUD AND ABUSE is astronomical...

Aside from the war on drugs, none of those violate anyone's liberty.

Actually? The War on drugs *IS* a violation of Liberty...or shall we go through Prohibition again? And WHY hasn't the Congress Amended the Constitution to reflect the 'War On Drugs'?

she said aside from, which means she is saying The WOD's did violate peoples liberties you fucking drunk.

If being stupid while posting on a message board was a crime? You're guilty. Seeing as it isn't? I'll just simply ask you to go fish.

from Article I section 8 of the US Constitution:

"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and General Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States"

I don't see any explicit limit placed on what CAN or CANNOT be considered providing for the general welfare of the United States. However, I've seen several people here lately argue that there is only ONE acceptable definition of 'general welfare' (conveniently their own) and it excludes anything that even slightly constitutes a redistribution of wealth.

I understand philosophical and ideological opposition to wealth redistribution. But I don't understand constitutional opposition.

How do you interpret the General Welfare clause?

Well except for that rather specific list of enumerated powers that follow it, you're right....... totally ambiguous.

Come on now these things are just a cost of fair business and serves a need to help them, don't you agree with welfare of the system by those at the top? Besides what is a few billion/trillion amoung friends. Just because Halliburton didn't deliver the food and charge for it, hey thats free enterprise.

all Ive seen from the tea party is garbage about how common people are living too good and the poor are worthless and schools should private, yet nothing about the greed at the top that dam near brought this country to it's knees, nothing about corporate welfare, nothing about getting rid of lobbyist on the right, only those who support the liberals.

The truth is your side is stupid and doesn't realize they are being used by the rich.
Name anything that you have done to get rid of corruption at the top where the trillions are at, instead of going after billions that are given to the poor.
