The only laws that will disarm criminals, is a TOTAL BAN, followed by confiscation

All these big-govt gun-haters are dancing carefully around the fact that none of their gun laws and restrictions will keep guns out of the hands of people who don't obey laws.....

....EXCEPT for a total ban on all guns for everybody, followed by massive confiscation of all guns presently in civilian hands.

They want to arrive at that slowly, a little at a time, so the frog in the kettle won't notice that the water is getting warmer.

So they only suggest a small restriction here, a ban on only certain guns there...... for now.

When do you suppose they'll notice that even their total gun ban, will work as well as the current nationwide bans on marijuana, cocaine, and exceeding the speed limit in your car?

"On August 1, 1966, Charles Whitman climbed to the top of the University of Texas Tower with three rifles, two pistols, and a sawed-off shotgun. The 25-year-old architectural engineering major and ex-Marine—who had previously complained of searing headaches and depression—had already murdered his mother, Margaret, and his wife, Kathy, earlier that morning. He fired his first shots just before noon, aiming with chilling precision at pedestrians below. “The crime scene spanned the length of five city blocks . . . and covered the nerve center of what was then a relatively small, quiet college town,” noted executive editor Pamela Colloff in her 2006 oral history of the shootings. “Hundreds of students, professors, tourists, and store clerks witnessed the 96-minute killing spree as they crouched behind trees, hid under desks, took cover in stairwells, or, if they had been hit, played dead.”

"At the time, there was no precedent for such a tragedy. Whitman “introduced the nation to the idea of mass murder in a public space,” wrote Colloff. By the time he was gunned down by an Austin police officer early that afternoon, he had shot 43 people, thirteen of whom died."

Today, mass murder shootings of innocent persons is news, but no one will consider such an act as abnormal or noteworthy beyond "Breaking News" on TV, and the ubiquitous NRA approved clichés ("guns don't kill people, people kill people": Right, Whitman could have thrown rocks from his high ground position).

Still no one has refuted the basic point of this thread.

.

How do we get guns away from criminals?

What's the plan?

Step by step, please.

.

1. Longer wait times on ALL gun purchases
2. Expanded background checks on all gun purchases, even during private transactions
3. Registration of all firearms
4. Mandatory insurance for all guns owned
5. MUCH stiffer penalties for illegal gun possession
6. Convicted criminals, mentally unstable can not own a weapon. Zero tolerance.

You meet all of the criteria above? Then you get to own as much and any gun you want.

Will that completely eliminate gun violence? Of course not, but it will make a noticeable impact.

How would have all your dream laws stopped this teenager in Troutdale?

And what is your plan to get the guns out of the hands of criminals now that you have screwed over the law abiding?

How would law abiding be "screwed over" by the above suggestions?

sorry, this is still america where we have rights and freedoms. some of us aren't willing to give up what we stand for yet.

Sounds like someone is a convict and worried about having his toys taken away.

Federal gun laws are enforced by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).[1] Most federal gun laws were enacted through:
National Firearms Act (1934)
Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (1968)
Gun Control Act of 1968 (1968)
Firearm Owners Protection Act (1986)
Undetectable Firearms Act (1988)
Gun-Free School Zones Act (1990) (ruled unconstitutional as originally written; has been upheld repeatedly after minor edits were made by Congress)
Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (1993)
Federal Assault Weapons Ban (1994–2004) (expired)
Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (2005)

What will MORE laws do?????
Why don't we do the same with guns?[/QUOTE]

A) but there are about 18,443 towns (after taking out bouroughs and counties).
Source: http://www.census.gov/geo/www/gazetteer/..
B) there are 3,086 counties There are HOW MANY Counties in the US ?
C) There are 50 states.

It is conceivable that every town, every county ever state has at least ONE or more laws regarding fire arms .
That is 21,579 laws regarding fire arms.

What will MORE laws do?????

i'm bright enough to know restrictive gun laws aren't the solution. how many more deaths will occur befor you liberal gun grabbers will open your eyes?

Heres a simple rule for the all or nothing bunch.

No laws will ever stop all of everything. But I dont see anyone talking about repealing rape laws, traffic signs, child molestation laws etc.

All those laws punish people after an act. I don't get a ticket and have a governor placed on my car's engine because someone else was speeding. My kids don't get taken away from me because the neighbor molested his/her own kid.

What you want to punish is the mere possession of a firearm that some arbitrary governmental idiot has considered "bad." Not using it wrongly (which is already illegal) but merely possessing it.

The only laws that will disarm criminals, is a TOTAL BAN, followed by confiscation

Yep, and not just criminals.

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
-Thomas Jefferson

BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!!!
You brought a gun, to a drone fight. When they can kill you in Virginia, while drinking coffee in New Mexico, you'd better hope that they like you because you'll never see it coming let alone be able to shoot back.

The numbers aren't in their favor and they can't be everywhere all the time.

Enemy operators have homes and families. You don't have to get to the operator to reduce his "will to fight".

It would definitely be non linear guerrilla warfare...and we haven't done so well lately in that kind of situation against dedicated opposition who are fighting for their homes and way of life.....vietnam, iraq, afghan, for example.

But we have a few of those - both to the political right and left - right here at USMB.
Socialists, anarchists, white supremacists and some just plain ists. Woo.

Yup. Even that will only keep honest people honest. We've had bans on liquor in the past. Drugs have never been legal. Cops have the right to raid homes, with cause, and they do that all the time without putting a dent in the drug trade.

They could ban anything and come into our homes and take whatever the hell they want. Yet, the criminals merely band together to form strong and well-armed cartels or gangs and continue business as usual.

The biggest change would be empowered criminals terrorizing the populace for decades before the law would catch up with some of them. The mafia and drug cartels are untouchable.

Never. Going. To. Happen. Period.

True.

The notion of ‘confiscation’ is ridiculous.

The Fifth Amendment jurisprudence, due process rights, the horrendous burden on the courts to adjudicate 300,000,000 separate just compensation claims – not to mention the evidence needed for warrants to search for firearms subject to ‘confiscation,’ the money, time, and manpower involved; fear of gun ‘bans’ and ‘confiscation’ is unwarranted, paranoid, delusional, and hyperbolic.
