it is legal in 33 states with a federal License that requires extensive background. check and a pretty high license fee. You have to keep the ATF informed where you store it but no weapon made after 1986 can be owned as an automatic. Very few are sold and they are heavily regulated. As far as I know no legal owner has ever committed a crime with one.
