The Tax Cut Shell Game

Another election is almost here, and with it comes legions of talking heads in
expensive suits promising us everything from peace to paradise on earth.
One word that's sure to get everyone's blood pumping this time of year is "Taxes"
No one likes to pay taxes, and many of these talking heads unfailingly promise
"big tax cuts" if they are elected. Lost in all the flag waving, and hoopla over tax
cut's however, hides a grim reality: We have bills to pay! As a small business
owner (I do billing and credentialing for Chiropractors and Ophthalmologists) I have
to manage my expenses, maximize profits, and yes...pay my taxes. If I lose a
client, and have less income as a result, I have to spend less, or go in debt.
The talking heads however play a tax cut shell game with all of us. They promise
we'll all pay less in taxes if they are elected, but press them for details on how
many soldiers and sailors will have to go without pay, or children will go without
education, or roads and bridges we can't maintain, or police and firefighters we
cannot hire because there is not enough tax revenue to pay them, and the talking
heads become very vague, and vanish faster than a mouse in a cat shelter. I am
not telling anyone who to vote for folks, but don't let those running for public office
play the tax cut shell game with you, insist on some details and do the math on
how we are going to pay our bills at the local, State, and Federal level with less
tax revenue than before these ballyhooed tax cuts became law.
