Actually he almost got them killed in complete indecisiveness since he only gave authority to shoot ... if ... their lives were in immediate peril. So they had to wait until guns were pointed at the victims on an ocean where target and shooter were moving in different directions and the slightest bit off would result in the death of the hostages. The military is who was impressive, just like with Bin laden.
