You are absolutely correct. With the proper licensing you can own any firearm you wish to have.

I have friends who have FFLs and have fully automatic M4s and M16s. They don't do anything for me (costs too damned much money for ammo to just waste it) but they aren't felons - they break no laws so why the hell not?

According to the DoJ statistics (which can viewed in the OP that you obviously haven't read), the amount of violent crimes prevented (between 800,000 and 2 million) also increased by (between) 100:1 and 250:1

In a crowded mall, 6 pumps of a 12 gauge with 0-0 could easily take down 40-60 people if the shooter choose the proper angle of attack, and waited slightly (about 0.75 to 1.5 seconds extra after each pump) between each blast, so the victims would fall to the floor, exposing new victims behind them.
