Reagan ran deficits, yes he did. But that is not the real surprise! His policies raised the income to the treasury after inflation adjustment by over 20%. Since back in those days we followed the constitution much more closely, congress held the purse strings, and spent the money.
Now everyone knows congress critters like to spend money, especially in those days when we really had separation of powers.
And so, blaming a President who increased income to Washington while lowering our individual tax liability is like shooting yourself in the foot, don't you think!

The only credit Reagan gets for lowering inflation is for keeping Paul Volker as chairman of the Federal Reserve. If you knew anything, you would know that it's Volker who is credited for bringing down inflation.

Later that year, he raised it again after the recession ended. Shortly into 1981, inflation began dropping and Volker again dropped the rate. Toward the summer of '81, Volker raised it again when inflation increased again.
