Tom Petty estate slams Kari Lake use of I Won't Back Down: "shocked that it's stolen, used without permission", will sue for promoting failed campaign

What is copyright infringement?
As a general matter, copyright infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner.
Weird Al had to get permission from every copyright owner before he could release any of his parodies.

Tom Petty’s estate is looking into suing MAGA anti-democracy grifter Kari Lake for hijacking his music “to promote her failed campaign”

Another fucking ignorant leftard idiot who has no idea what publishing means.

Tell ya what dumbass, go try to release a song and then unrelease it.

Go try to tell your distributor he no longer has permission to release the song, and then see what happens

You leftard morons are so completely fucking ignorant you don't even know when you're lying.

Which means you end up lying ALL THE TIME.

You just go that extra mile to display how incredibly stupid you are when you don’t have to. You could just sit there and say nothing in and not make yourself look like a complete idiot but, God love you, you just jump right in there with both feet.

You apparently have no understanding of copyright law. When you purchase a piece of music you simply by the right to listen to it, you don’t get any right to use it commercially.

What do you think listening to it IS, shit for brains?

Gawd damn you fucking leftard asswipes are terminally stupid.

I’ll say it again and use small words so you understand. Just because you buy a record doesn’t mean you own the rights to do anything you want with the music.

FAICT, Petty's estate retains the rights and distributes his works themselves. Dana Petty in particular (sole executrix). And you're just as full of shit as ever.

Dumb fucking shit for brains leftard, no matter how much BULLSHIT you spew into the airwaves, the simple undeniable fact remains that you don't have to ask the publisher for permission to play the record. REGARDLESS of whether you've purchased it or not.

You fucking retarded blowhards should crack a book before flapping your terminally ignorant yaps

He most certainly do have to ask permission to play the record in public where you have a commercial interest in playing it. You can’t sing the song on television without the Petty Estate’s consent, or use it in an ad.

When you purchase a song you have the right to listen to it. Nothing more. Anything else requires a release from the owner.

Every Friday before a live awards show we were on the phones making sure we had the Releases for every piece of music being used for that broadcast. And we couldn’t leave until we had them.

These copyright issues happen all the time.

Whatever.

Fleetwood Mac sued Al Gore for using ”Dont Stop” during his campaign.
It's very difficult to prove commercial use.

If you're using the song in an ad, that could definitely be construed as commercial use.

But if you're just using it as background music before a speech, it would be a lot harder.

You just moved the goalposts, fucktard.

Way ahead of you
