Images on social media from the scene showed smoke rising from one of the terminal buildings. The cause of the explosions is unknown.

Reports say the blasts were in the departures area and speak of casualties although this has not been confirmed.

The blasts come four days after the capture in Brussels of Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in the Paris attacks in November.

Belgian media say the airport is being evacuated. It has been closed to flights. Rail transport to the facility has been halted.

Social media reports from the scene speak of panic as people fled the airport buildings.

US official: 'suitcase bomb at airport'
A US official says security officials believe at least one suitcase bomb was detonated at Brussels Airport, AP reports.

The unnamed official confirmed a statement by a Brussels official that there is also concrete evidence of one suicide bombing at the airport Tuesday as well.

The official said the explosives seen in Brussels appeared sophisticated. Investigators will examine them to see if they bear the same characteristics as those used in Paris last year.

The injured missionaries are Elder Richard Norby, 66, of Lehi, Utah; Elder Joseph Empey, 20, of Santa Clara, Utah; and Elder Mason Wells, 19, of Sandy, Utah.

The three men were taking Sister Fanny Rachel Clain, 20, of Montélimar, France, to the airport on her way to a mission assignment in Ohio, church spokesman Eric Hawkins said. Sister Clain had been serving in that mission while awaiting a permanent visa for the United States.

I made comment much earlier about my friend and then her younger sister. My friend located her younger sister aged 20 years-old who she thought might be at the Metro, earlier she couldn't account for her....now they find her, at the hospital, she has no legs anymore.
