Too bad you did not include Dwight Eisenhower in your survey.

His greatest legacy, the Interstate Highway system put America on wheels and was the greatest reason for the wealthiest middle class in human history.

Reagan on down through Clinton, things actually did start falling apart at the end of Clinton's terms, Bush JR & Obama are the ones that took us down quite a few notches.

Both in economic & military terms...since I am not sure which we are talking about.

Ike and Truman presided over an America with four or five percent of the world's population and fifty percent of its resources.

Wrong. The interstate highway system is a huge socialist boondoggle that decreased the wealth of this nation.

You speak like someone who has never travelled farther than the one mile gravel road between Hacksville and Hootertown.

The Interstate Highway system allows people to travel from Seattle to Miami, from Boston to San Diego, from Sab Francisco to Buffalo, from Denver to Memphis without the encumbrance of a single traffic light or stop sign.

If you think that this did not encourage and enable regular people to buy cars, establish the predominance of American automobile industry, then one must come to the conclusion that you are either blind, don't drive or are ignorant.

I traveled all the contiguous 48 states as I described above. I found that pretty much all the interstate roads, east to west, north to south, were smooth as table top, all the bridges looked OK whether I traveled over on under them, and all the tolls I had to pay were reasonable and fair.

There may be shortcomings in the overall administration of the Interstate Highway system, but it is still one of the things that America can most justifiable proud of, because there is nothing like it anywhere in the world.

Yes, thank to President Eisenhower.

My first thought was Ike as well.

Eisenhower was THE president for the "GREATEST GENERATION".

As military man, none could have been better.

I have only one complaint about Ike, and I wish he had been aware of the fact that he had a phone and a pen as the empty suit pretender in the White House has today.

In 1956 I escaped Hungary for my life, along with another 400,000 for taking part in the Revolution, most of whom would have loved to immigrate to America. Due to a law, which would be deemed racist, today, only so many of those could immigrate to America, because the law set the number based on the number of immigrants from a given country.

I missed the boat, figuratively and literally. By now I have no regret, and sometimes I am even grateful that I ended up in Canada.

If President Eisenhower had been as aware of pen and phone as the current pretender empty suit, he would have issued an executive order to allow the same Hungarian freedom fighters the same ease of entrance to America as subsequent presidents granted to Cubans.

During the 1st President Bush. U.S. had won Persian Gulf War with an international coalition. U.S.S.R collapsed and U.S. won Cold War. Panama invaded and Pineapple face Noreiga arrested. China still recovering from internal strife of Tienanmen Square. then came Clinton, H. Bush's retarded son, and now the lump of shit we have in the White House. China becomes a threat, U.S. jobs exported there, Bush the younger borrows billions from China to invade Iraq, depose Saddam and eventually empower the Iranians in that region. Smart move dip-shit neo-cons. Now Obama...oh man I can't take it.

There's no doubt that the interstate highway system increased the wealth of the trucking industry, but that doesn't prove that it increased the wealth of America. Before the interstate highways were built, we had a perfectly serviceable transportation system called the railroad system. Not only did it transport goods more cheaply than trucks, but it didn't cost the taxpayers a dime. So how did the taxpayers receive a net benefit from the $500 billion they spent in interstate highways? We are $500 billion poorer because of the interstate highways, not richer.

Eisenhower was a socialist dupe who positively harmed this country and decreased the freedoms we formerly enjoyed. Only a statist bootlicker would admire him.

The idea of driving from Miami to Seattle is utterly ludicrous. True, it would never have been conceivable without a boondoggle like the interstate highway system. Instead what would have happened is that for interstate travel people would drive their cars onto railway cars especially designed for the purpose and then allowed the railroad to transport them to whatever city they wanted to go to.

Spending a lot of additional capital and cars and trucks that wouldn't be useful if it wasn't for the interstate highway system is not an efficient use of capital. It's a complete waste of money.

There's also nothing like the Taj Majal anywhere in the world. But when you consider all the people who could have been housed and fed with the money used to create this colossal waste of money, you understand that it's an offense against human decency and ethical government.
