This would be an unusually warm December in Jackson, Miss., or Atlanta, or El Paso, on the Mexican border. In New York City, it is shaping up to be the most abnormally warm month ever recorded, by a lot.

If the forecast for the rest of December is on the mark, the average temperature for the month will be 51.6 degrees — 14.1 degrees above the normal of 37.5. The current record-holder for such deviations is March 1945, which was 8.6 degrees above normal. The city is said to be heading for a soggy, record-shattering high of 72 degrees on Christmas Eve.
