TWO dead, 2200 in shelters across storm-ravaged Gaza Strip

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- "The death toll in the Gaza Strip from winter storm Alexa rose to two on Sunday as more than 2,000 Gazans remained in shelters and much of the region was still paralyzed after four days of severe weather.

Gaza Ministry of Health spokesperson Ashraf al-Qidra in a statement Sunday identified the two dead as 21-year-old Hamza al-Amour, who suffocated to death while trying to heat himself at home, and 90-year-old Mahmoud Farajallah, who died after his house was flooded.

As of Sunday, government figures showed that 2,234 residents were still in shelters after widespread flooding across the territory displaced hundreds of families in the preceding days."

Over the course of the storm, the article reports that more than 5,000 people were evacuated to shelters, but many had apparently since returned home or left shelters to stay with relatives.

It's sad to see anyone dead from a storm like this. However, even here in the U.S. and also in Europe and elsewhere you read about people who died in a storm. In fact, whenever there is some natural catastrophe, whether it is snow storms, floods, earthquakes, tornados, etc, there are always people who have died and people who have been displaced. Did any of those displaced during Katrina take refuge in your own state?

There are still some 14,000 homes in Israel without power, but Gaza has supplies, industrial fuel and their power plant is running, and they have diesel and cooking fuel. Power plant only served a third of Gaza and shut because Hamas did not want to pay the PA for the fuel.
Nine people in Israel died due to the storm.
