USA Today: No Blacks or Females in Dunkirk Movie

I don't know that much about the history of Dunkirk

The British Army defending France and Belgium from German invasion retreated when defeat was inevitable. They withdrew to the French coast at Dunkerque (English spelling Dunkirk) East of Calais. Under attack from German infantry, armour, and air forces, the British has insufficient amphibious equipment to withdraw back to England across The Channel and were pinned down on the beaches. The British Expeditionary Force would have been annihilated if not for the efforts of English boatmen (civilian volunteers) who made many trips across The Channel to rescue British soldiers.

While many non-whites, mostly Indians, Nepalese, and Africans served in the British Army, none did so in the English Home Islands. So, there were no non-whites serving in the BEF at the battle of Dunkirk. To my knowledge, there were no women serving in the BEF in any capacity nor were there any women among the civilian boatmen who aided in the evacuation of the BEF so putting in the movie would be a historical anachronism.
if they were there - include them and be historically correct.

if not - leave 'em out and stop being politically correct.

I don't know that much about the history of Dunkirk and have yet to see the movie. Not sure where the black criticism comes in, but even if it was mostly a battle involving white men, they could have thrown in some worried mothers, nurses, etc. I guess. I normally get excited for new war movies, but the trailers I have seen for this one just are not connecting with me.

So you too believe we should rewrite history so as to be Politically Correct. None of the participants had any sort of a black population.

Here, educate yourself. I didn't realize that WW-II and the great battles were so foreign to people today.

Dunkirk evacuation - Wikipedia

I have no excitement for realistic war movies. They give me nightmares.

'Dunkirk' is a spectacular World War II epic (review)

Dunkirk was the evacuation of white British soldiers fleeing the advancing white German army soldiers.

So it's kind hard to inject negro soldiers into the movie and still retain historical accuracy. .....

It was a retreat......the socialists drove them out of France....I know a lot of movies have covered the other battles of WW2...but how is a moment where Britain and the French got their asses handed to them a good movie experience?

It was a remarkable battle, a heroic battle.

The Nazi's had cut off, trapped hundreds of thousands of mostly British troops. America had not yet entered the war. Had Hitler been successful, Britain would have been severely crippled.

Adolph Hitler had expected to capture and/or kill most all of them. Churchill made a plea to the public to join the military in rescuing soldiers from the beach. Hundreds of privately owned boats of all sizes joined in the rescue effort. Tugboats, sailboats, fishing boats any and everything that floated. From May 27, 1940, through June 4th, over 330,000 British troops were rescued, over 240 ships and boats were sunk.

It was a huge moral and strategic victory for the Allies.

Sidebar.

Can anyone name the Oscar winning Best Picture winner that had no female speaking roles?

Lawrence of Arabia. A really, really long movie. I saw it when it came out and I was in high school. I didn't notice that there were no women in a speaking role until many decades later.

The socialists had 350,000 (male, white) Allies trapped with the only options to surrender or die. Until civilians decided to jump in tiny boats to rescue them. There is no military reason for the socialists letting this happen. It was a miracle.

So yes, it's a worthy event to make a movie. Haven't seen it yet so I can't comment how good it is.

Update again ... I wrote a very comprehensive review of this movie and, for some stupid reason, my post just disappeared. So, bottom line, I DO NOT recommend this movie. It is terrible.

For the record, there are very few movies I don't enjoy at least to some degree.
Why did you not like it? Bullet points so you don't have to retype.

Update: I'm watching the movie now and there are black soldiers fighting with French units (Algerian soldiers) and British women Red Cross nurses serving aboard British destroyers and hospital ships.

So, the claim there are no blacks or women in the movie is wrong.
Blacks and women in the movie?
I'm not watching it.

Anyone ever stop to consider the FACT that during WWII black and white soldiers were segregated? Also, consider the FACT that women weren't allowed to be at the front in war zones during that time either.

I know a lot of you call me a crazy liberal on here, but I agree that including blacks and women in this movie to be PC over historically accurate is dumb.

It didn't win best picture but I don't recall any female speaking roles in Saving Private Ryan.
Sidebar just learned while home shopping. Private Ryan is based on a story of 4 brothers from Bedford VA. 3 brothers died in the opening days of Normandy. 39 men from Bedford were there on D Day. 19 died the first day. Largest per capita loss in the US. Very nice DDay memorial there now.

Many who think they are liberal are actually conservative.

I am talking about the movie of it......it was a retreat......movies about losing aren't as interesting as those where you win, especially when you win against over whelming odds...
