For Christ's sake, it was the CIA Agents at the very Ameican embassy in Hong Kong that nearly got its grubby hands on Snowden. He only escaped them by the skin of his teeth. It's a lot like Stalin vs. Hitler - if you can convince one of them that you are an admirer then you might be afforded some assistance against the other one.
