Something borrowed, something blue turned into something black and blue for a couple who were beaten and robbed at gunpoint on the morning of their wedding.

"I was robbed at gunpoint and beaten, and my wife and mother were also attacked and robbed," the groom, Nathan Brooks, said. "We didn't let this stop us from getting married. We're happy. Our wedding was fantastic."

The 26-year-old had left the Tropic Cay Sports Bar, 529 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., and was returning to his hotel room in the 3100 block of Windamar Street about 3:14 a.m. Monday when the armed robber approached him, according to an arrest report.

"I just saw the gun and I said, 'Take whatever you want,' and he started beating me," Brooks said.

The robber struck the left side of Brooks' face with the gun, causing him to fall. The gunman continued to hit Brooks on the head with his gun and kick his body while going through his pockets and stealing cash and a cellphone, the report stated.

The bride, Julia Martinez,33, and the groom's mother, Sherrie Geisler, 51, went looking for Brooks. They found him lying in the street and came across the robber. He pulled out his gun again and pointed it at Martinez, who pleaded for her life. Geisler jumped on the gunman and a struggle ensued, police said.

The robber then pistol-whipped the women while demanding their valuables. He escaped with more cash and another cellphone, the arrest report stated.

"Luckily, everyone survived," Brooks said.

Brooks received stitches at Broward Health Medical Center; the women declined treatment for their injuries, police said. He also had a broken nose, two black eyes, a chipped tooth, scrapes and bruises. The worst part for him, however, is the impact the attack has had on his loved ones.
