What if there was a "cure"? Part 2

so who on this forum is gay ? besides Amanda ?

there is one gay porno ( bunch of teenage boys fucking each other ) that i like but for some reason i don't like the other ones.

i would fuck a guy if he was really young and hot, but otherwise no.

in my dreams i am often having sex with some women but never with a man. but then in my dreams i don't masturbate either and in real life i do.

also for some reason i always tend to fuck girls in the ass.

hm ...

shit, i just realized that i am hopelessly straight. so much for trying to be different :)

there is nothing to discuss here!

if there was a cure those who consider themselves sick would take it.

end of story.

I suspect that if homosexuality could be eliminated there would be some homosexuals who would choose to do it. Beyond that, there's the question of parents and children. Suppose they reach a point where they can tell that the developing embryo or fetus has a relatively high probability of developing into a homosexual and they can also provide a low or zero risk intervention for ensuring that won't happen; that the offspring will develop into a heterosexual. I would certainly choose the intervention for my offspring and I suspect a whole bunch of other parents would as well.

When it comes down to defining sexual orientation in terms of preference for sexual contact with members of the opposite sex vs. preference for sexual contact with members of an individual's own sex, there is a normal sexual orientation in our species and homosexuality isn't it. It is not just a "normal" variant of sexuality like green is a normal variant of hair color or brown is a normal variant of hair color. You're talking about a behavior that is clearly associated with a critical biological function. For instance: When the male reaches climax, there is an associated release of gametes. To say that sexually motivated behavior has nothing to do with an underlying function of reproduction and that there is not something "off" about a sex drive directed primarily at members of an individual's own sex is absurd.

I'm not going to support throwing people in jail or preventing homosexuals from doing whatever they want to do in terms of "sex" between consenting adults. But if I can keep my kid from having an abnormal sexual orientation, I'm going to do it.

From my conversations with the big guy (Gunny ), i think I'm ok to start this up again. I think this is proof that the moderation on this board is fair and if you just talk with them before going nuts you can sometimes get things fixed without the drama.

So... can we please try to have this discussion again, but keep the focus on the possibilities and ethics of it and not your personal opinions about me and my motivation for starting the discussion? I would be very appreciative. :)

That said...

What if there were a medical solution for homosexuality? This could take many forms. Maybe it could cure an adult, or maybe it could be done pre-natally. Maybe it would only a short term fix and required ongoing therapy to make "stick". In any case what I'm talking about would be voluntary for an adult or at the discretion of a parent for a child.

So... would you be in favor of any or all of these methods and why or why not?

Discuss.

You are working from a false assumption. That being that homosexuality is a disease in need of a "cure". Claiming that African-Americans, Chinese, Hispanics or any other racial/cultural group needs a "cure" for their "condition" is an equally flawed assumption.

No, you are working from a false assumption. This is about bioethics, not how I feel about homosexuality.

a solution implies a problem.
i disagree that it's a problem.

unless one feels like trolling so the people who do think there's a problem chime in.

funny how that works.

I'm sorry if you think I'm trolling, Jillian, I don't think I am. This is just a subject that I'm interested in and have a lot of questions about and what to understand what people think of.

Here's another thought... what about people that feel they want to change their gender through hormones and surgery. Clearly they are dissatisfied with how they are, and they are just trying to find a way to live happy.

Should they be allowed to do this?

Aah ... now I think you may see the wrong in using the word "cure", at least I hope you do after I point it out this time, but again we don't always understand each other.

The wording is everything in a matter, there are many examples of how just by changing the wording of ones own thoughts you can change your whole life. Transgendered (the accepted medical term for them) as you say are changing because they want to and are unhappy with their situation. This does not mean that there is something wrong with how they are or how they want to be. However, do you think of it as they are seeking a "cure" for being born in the wrong gender? Is being born a gender they don't like a disease?

No, thus why it wouldn't be a cure for homosexuality, especially if it proves that's how they are born. It would be changing the way they are naturally into something they may just want to be.

Scientists have been searching for the gay gene for years. It has yet to be found, but the hope, of course, is that if they find it homosexuals will be able to say "see, I was born this way!" Fair enough. However, homosexuality may also have environmental component. For example, more homosexuals have endured sexual abuse as a child than heterosexuals. (Just google search this if you want to read the various papers available, although keep in mind that much of this research is considered 'taboo' by the PC establishment.) And recent research seems to point to an enzyme in the hypothalamic region of the brain at much higher levels for homosexuals (as I mentioned in your other thread). So if one wishes to avoid homosexual tendencies, it may be possible in the future for a doctor to prescribe a drug to adjust the brain chemistry to that of a heterosexual. And if there is an environmental component, mental health therapy may be effective.

What if it is the homosexual tendencies that alter brain chemistry?

I disbelieve your abuse point, and not because it isn't PC to discuss it...because the evidence isn't credible. Prolly why you were afraid to post a link.

Then again, maybe you believe credibility is PC.

So this is your way of telling us that Dick Cheney, Phyllis Schlafly, and Alan Keyes are child sexual abusers? ;)
Well, when you put it that way.

This reminds me of a woman down here that sued to be given custody of her lesbian daughter's child. She insisted her daughter would make the child gay. Talk about stoopid.

...(assorted crap removed for readability)

That's a distinct possibility and is usually mentioned in the research.

The propensity to be homosexual rises in direct correlation to the number of older brothers one has,
Scientists in Canada have discovered that the probability of a man being gay rises significantly according to the number of elder brothers he has, when these brothers are born of the same mother.

that seems to indicate that it is more nurture than nature.

 I have five brothers. None of them are gay.

Your personal experience is not a scientific study.
If none of your five brothers has prostrate cancer does that mean that prostrate cancer doesn't exist?

I remember when that study came out. I sent it to a few friends and coworkers just as an FYI. I got a response from a guy (who, btw, is named 'Bruce') who angrily asked me HOW MANY BROTHERS DO I HAVE! I don't have any, but I found out he had 4 older brothers. I didn't know so of course I apologized. (I didn't tell him that it wouldn't matter to me if he were gay or not, but I decided to leave that one alone.)
