what is the big deal with picking a Pope?

They picked a South American Pope out of fear of the dramatic growth of Mormonism in that region of the world.

You think that's the case? im skeptical.

From what I hear, he was the runner up when Benedict was selected.

In a rare moment of expressed fury that he was driven out of headlines by the selection of the Pope, obama fought back by decreeing that the white house tours would continue.

a bird (seagull) perched upon the stovepipe before Pope Francis was announced.....:eusa_angel:

very telling that the new Pope chose the name of St. Francis.....a saint who chose a life of poverty and loved all God's creatures...

Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.

I was wrong

And the new pope is: Argentina's Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

Sounds Italian though
But it will be the same song, just the second verse. He is certainly no reformer.

Against birth control, gay rights, women priests and pro celibacy

Keeping the church relevant in the 21st century

society's great 'relevance' today......:rolleyes:

birth control.....how's that working like in Europe where the population is disappearing due to too much birth control.....?

gay rights....how's that working at keeping the family unit together....?

women priests....how's that 'womens rights' been working for women so far....? they got to go to work just like the men now doing both jobs of work and home.....pretty soon will have to serve in the armed forces too....families suffer from lack of attention from wives and mothers.....not to mention women are largely treated like sexual objects today....

the 'old-fashioned' ideas of the Church aren't so 'old-fashioned' anymore when you look at the negative results of the so-called 'relevant' ideas of society today....

Birth control? Let's look at how well the churches opposition to birth control has worked. Before birth control women had four to six kids and were tied to the home raising them whether they could afford them or not. Since birth control, women have only the number of children they want. With AIDS rampant in Africa, the church forbids condoms

Womens rights? Are you talking about being able to support themselves, enter the workforce and be considered the equal to men?

Everywhere but the Catholic Church

The Bible isn't relevant to secularists. The church is not supposed to be relevant.

You left out that half of all hetero marriages end in divorce...so much for lambasting Gay marriage as an affront to the institution.

In fairness, I kind of like the new pope. Couldn't stand Pope Benny

While Americans and Europeans push for birth control, women priests, and an end to celibacy....who really cares?

We ignore the church on those issues anyway. If the church wants to stay in the dark ages it doesn't affect Catholics in industrialized nations

Pope Francis seems intent on focusing on global poverty and the bizarre distribution of wealth. Which will have more global impact

It will have 0 impact. People are no longer gullible puppets of the church. You've got your Sunday socials that blow in the wind as soon as they walk out the door and then there's the few diehards that believe the earth is 6000 years old.

Neither of them shape much of anything on a global scale any longer.
