Vietnam was not a war just started by any one party. In 1950 Truman sent in US troops to assist with the $10 million worth of equipment sent in. 1954 there were US pilots flying planes there.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial officially recognises US involvement in 1955 under Eisenhower.

But the war had been going on before this. The US didn't start the war at all. US involvement happened at different times under every post war president, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson. Yes, three were Democrats, but that ignores the reality that ANY individual as president would probably have done very similar things.
