The law prohibits the federal government from using the armed forces in a domestic police role, except in situations specifically authorized by the Constitution or Congress.
Mattis emphasized that he would use his expanded authorities only in response to a specific, detailed request from Secretary of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and that none has yet been made.
"I now have the authority to do more," Mattis told reporters. "Now we'll see what she asks me."

All this said, the Army is there only to support the border patrol agents, so if there is violence it will be between violent migrants and the US border patrol agents and the Army will only step in if the violence is great enough to overwhelm the capabilities of border patrol agents, and if that were to happen, this would properly be called an invasion and it would be proper for the US Army to defend our borders by any means necessary.

Again, that is a narrow and not surprisingly dumb view of what is going on.
