Who would be the dominant partner in a US and Russia alliance?

Why does everyone keep insisting that America would be Russia's puppet in an alliance? If you compare the militaries, the only place Russia is anywhere near comparable to the US is in nuclear weapons. In terms of GDP and economic influence, Russia's economy is a joke in comparison to the economic might of the US.

Russia only has what we allow them to have. They would have been defeated by Nazi Germany had we not sent them Lend-Lease weapons and equipment. They also wouldn't have had nuclear weapons had they not stolen them from us.
