Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush, are a couple of Presidents I respect the most for putting politics aside and doing what was best for the country. Carter's policies broke the back of run-away inflation, brought Israel and Egypt together and help initiate the downfall of the Soviet Union. Initiating an economic slow down as Carter did and raising taxes as H.W. did certainly isn't any way to win popularity contests, but both their successors and Americans benefitted from their actions.

Ford's silly WIN buttons (Whip Inflation Now) surprisingly didn't do the trick. Carter's selection of Paul Volcker and his policy of putting the economy on ice was the best action by a Fed chairman we've had in quite a while. And the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was their Vietnam which ended up bankrupting them. Yes, the Iranian Hostages Crisis costs 6 American lives but that was a hell of a lot less than the lives lost during the crisis-upon-crisis Reagan years.
