They are being saved. They were moved and will be scattered throughout the grounds.-I agree, they both look nice! Both before and after look nice. Not a big deal to me.
It was her option to do as first lady.
But people redoing landscaping usually try to save the trees.... or in this case, save the trees with historical meaning....
The sophisticated look of her garden.... with like white roses or flowers, and the nice walkway, could have been achieved with leaving the crab apple trees of JFK.... Imho.
But again, it is not unusual for first Ladies to make changes to the Rose Garden, I don't believe?
The flowers in the garden are largely pastels, which are favored by the first lady, including taller white roses, which were in honor of the first papal visit to the White House by Pope John Paul II in 1979. A diamond-like shape of boxwoods was also added, while about a dozen crabapple trees were removed and will be replanted elsewhere on the grounds.

BEFORE/AFTER: White House Rose Garden, newly renovated by Melania Trump, set for first lady’s convention speech
The renovations to the White House Rose Garden, done in the spirit of the 1962 Kennedy plans, have been finished in time for its moment in the campaign spotlight.
