Why do some states oppose sports betting and gaming?

The real reason for gambling is revenue for the taxing authorities. The issue is more and more state and local areas are allowing more and more gambling establishments and more for that purpose. There are men and women who get caught up in it and it bankrupts them. It also affects people who are in the lower economic levels. States and local taxing authorities start programs based on revenues from gambling. Then they add more and more programs and the revenues stall. So the taxes are raised massively to compensate. This is the negative side to it. The positive side is if you go out to spend a few hours and know what you can spend, have at it.

Freedom and liberty.....they day. But gambling or sports betting no way. What are the reasons for such nonsense?

People engage in gambling in every state, regardless of its legal status. Legalizing it opens the state up to regulating and overseeing the gambling industry. Operators and patrons seek to fix outcomes and cheat each other all of the time. Loaded dice, marked cards, point shaving, you name it.

Its just a lot easier to outlaw the enterprise, and allow those involved to take their own risks rather than have gaming cops and lawyers investigating crooks cheating each other.

Further, legalizing the activity does make it more popular and does attract more people to lose their money this way. Takes money out of people's budget that could be used for other commercial activities more helpful to the economy.

Based on what?

Some people are gambleholics and need protected from themselves.

Government makes gambling illegal and bam, no one can gamble!

What color is the sky in your world? Do you have unicorns? Can fish fly?

Correct. These state governments think taxing gaming revenue is a way not to raise taxes and still spend money like drunken sailors.

Because they are busybodies, scolds, and, statists? :dunno:

As long as NY allows Gambling sooner rather than later, I don't care what the other States do.

That's the beauty of federalism. Striking down that dumb law that limited sports betting to Nevada and Delaware was one of the better SC judgements in recent memory.
