The agency has teamed up with the state of New Mexico and others as part of a $1 million pilot project to eradicate the pigs from the state. Nationally, federal officials say the feral pig population has ballooned to an estimated 5 million. (AP Photo/Courtesy of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Using the cover of darkness, feral pigs have learned to outsmart even the most seasoned hunters as they set about on their nightly terrors, rooting up crops and suburban gardens, harassing native wildlife and turning watering holes into pigsties.

FIVE MILLION? That's what the article says @ $1 Million in Taxpayer Funds to Eradicate Feral Pigs | CNS News

I take out feral pigs at every opportunity. Sometimes 5 or 6 a year. Two or three for my own freezer and the rest go to hunters for the hungry.

My own state has been slow to come around to the destructive tendencies of these animals and are going to be behind the curve of seriously reducing their numbers, I am afraid, for some time to come.

Those little bastards can do a hell of a lot of damage.

You bet. I live out in the country and have a few friends who regularly invite me and whoever I can round up to come out and do what we can towards alleviating the problem. They can ruin an entire crop if you don't keep them in check and they breed like rabbits. The problem is that they aren't specialists like most animals who can be destructive but have a limited diet. Pigs will eat anything....hell they will even root up tobacco. I don't know whether they eat it or not, but the damage is the same.

Their numbers are on the rise all over, even in upstate NY,they can grow to be very large. Its becoming a problem.

Smarter than dogs generally speaking. Being a nusance animal, you are allowed to bait them on the day you plan to hunt. If we couldn't do that, I think we would get a lot less of them. They can't resist sweet potatoes.
