4-year-old grabs loaded gun at family BBQ and accidentally kills wife of Tennessee sheriff’s deputy

NASHVILLE — Authorities say a 4-year-old boy grabbed a loaded gun at a family cookout and accidentally shot and killed the wife of a Tennessee sheriff’s deputy.

Investigators say Wilson County Deputy Daniel Fanning on Saturday was showing his weapons to a relative in a bedroom of his Lebanon home when the toddler came in and picked up a gun off the bed. Sheriff Robert Bryan says the weapon discharged, hitting 48-year-old Josephine Fanning.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. The child is not related to her or her husband.

Bryan says the shooting was a terrible accident and that within seconds of Fanning placing the gun on the bed, the toddler picked it up.

The gun was not Fanning’s service weapon and the sheriff says the deputy’s weapons are normally stored in a safe.

If only the deputy's wife had an AR-15 she could have killed the 4 year old and saved her life.

Another example of senseless death caused by not enough guns.

Who senseless shows off their guns but stupid right wingers? If is had been an AK41 they would all probably be dead.

A child being able to get a loaded gun on a bed and shooting some one is not an accident. No like a car accident, accidental drowning, it is gross negligence and the sheriff who owned the gun should be charge with man slaughter.

Driving a stick is an absolute pain in the city, doesn't make it illegal.

By the way, what the fuck is a war weapon? Knife? Swords? Bows and arrows? Rocks? BEcause wars have been fought with everyone of those.

By the way, did you know beat cops think that more permissible concealed carry makes them safer? Is there a particular reason you prefer to make a cops job more dangerous?

It's also because of the highly flammable fuel that they burn.

Among other reasons.

Ethanol is illegal? Since when? Why does the federal government require it to be mixed with gasoline if it is illegal?

Just admit you are wrong and drop it.

Is Danica Patrick allowed to drive her Indy car on the streets of America?

Yes or no?

Just admit you are wrong and drop it.

Yup. But for the sake of argument, would an expanded back round check have prevented this ? How about a magazine limited to 15 rounds ?
Lanza only had to reload 4 times, with his 30 round magazine. If he had been limited to a 10 round clip, he would have had to reload 14 times!

What if the gun jammed on clip 7? Or he drops it?

How many children may have gotten away?

Laughner was only stopped in Tucson because he was reloading.

Lanza actually reloaded a lot more than he had to.
He shot 152 bullets.

But thanks for completely missing the point.

Maybe, I have an open mind, but this was a year old with his fathers gun. How would expanded background checks, two new questions on the 4273, bans on cosmetic features of certain firearms, or an out right ban on fore arms prevented this "accident" considering the gun owner would be subject to none of that ?
I'm not talking about this situation, I'm talking about Sandy Hook.

This situation only illuminates the sick fixation on guns, collecting guns, showing off guns, worshiping guns.

Let me see, Indy cars lack the required safety features, so the answer is no. Notice how I managed to answer that without mentioning horsepower or fuel? I will also point out that, if she added the required lights to her car it would be perfectly legal to drive it on the street.

How are any of the gun control laws supposed to stop something like this from happening? The only way to stop this from happening is to confiscate every single gun in the world.

People like you make it less likely that there will be stronger gun control in the US.
Please keep up the good work.

The point is that he never emptied his magazines, he switched them quite often, just like anyone who plays a first person shooter game learns to do.

This story is suspicious. Quite a coincidence that the deputy's gun just happens to kill his wife. Maybe he just blamed the 4 year old. He might've wanted his wife dead. Seriously a deputy would know better than to bring a loaded gun to a BBQ. And what, the 4 year old is such an accurate shot that he killed a woman?

1999-2010: 8839 people we killed in an accident involving firearms - average of 758/yr.
Compared to as many as 300,000,000 guns.
That works out to 0.00025% of guns.
:dunno:

Who is the pathetic loser who put a LOADED gun where a little boy could pick it up? What happened to parental responsibility?

Charge the parents with manslaughter - this wasn't an accident, it could have been prevented had these retards kept the gun away from their son! They are responsible for the death of this woman!

Sometimes accidents happen. Not every accident requires someone's imprisonment.

The gun would be very heavy for a 4 year old to hold never mind pull the trigger.

Has it crossed anyone's mind that the 4 year old is the scapegoat and the guy shot his own wife knowing it would be hard to get the whole story out of said 4 year old? Maybe the kid was in there, but he didn't pull the trigger. Perhaps we all need to know more about this before assuming the kid did it because if this guy is law enforcement and showing off his collection, why was it loaded??? Were there others in the room who saw the kid pick it up and then it went off and they SAW it themselves in the kids hands? Or is it just this guys story?

Yanno................ballistics, and seeing where the bullets went could clear that up quite nicely.

An average person shooting would have the gun at about 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 feet.

A 4 year old is significantly shorter than that.

An adult shooting someone? It would be from a downward angle (remember, men are taller than women, generally), or, it would be at the level.

If a 4 year old shot it, it would have to come up at quite a significant angle.

Check and see if you can get the police reports.

Yes, because ballistics is magic.

Actually, ballistics is science and math.

Ballistics is only science and math when it is used it is used to study projectiles in flight. Once it gets into telling me which gun fired which bullet, and trying to tell me who was holding the gun when it was fired, it dissolves into bullshit and illusion.

Please don't force me to shove the truth down your throat, do a search of the posts where I have already discussed the fraud that sends people to prison all the time in the name of science.

Interior, exterior and terminal ballistics, yes.
The rest is inference.
