538 Analysis: Why the Democrats have shifted Left

My only hope is someday... BOTH SIDES... all of us understand the meaning of this little cartoon:

divide-and-conquer-cartoon-pinterest.jpg

That we understand that the MSM only exists to keep us divided and blaming "the other guy" instead of paying attention to what the fuck is really going on.
And what is going on is corporatism/globalism/elitism is taking over America. The benefit of production is every single year getting more and more concentrated. And BOTH parties are not only not doing fuck all to stop it - they are part of it. BOTH SIDES.

The centrist, big business democrats are the most cowardly jellyfish that ever pretended to fight for the common man. They buckled under pressure and made deep comprises at every turn. Only the progressives seem to have any courage or conviction. If the center is so great for America why did they seem to hardly ever accomplish anything for the working person?
You do realize that the Trumpsters say exactly the same kind of thing?

What is your opinion of President Obama going public with his concerns about the trajectory of the party? Don't you think him saying that in public is important?
.
The party has it's problems to be sure but if we are ever to claw back some power from the billionaires the progressives are clearly the ones to lead that fight.
You’re saying that there are no billionaires that are Democrats?
Are you retarded?

The guy that failed to live up to his every promise?

And furthermore...

EVERY one of us should have celebrated Trumps win. Not because he is Trump. He is an idiot, but because HE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO WIN! A non establishment person won! This created a PANIC across the establishment, including the media. And from day one they have all made it their collective mission to get the White House back. Republican or Democrat... they want another corporatist/globalist back in the White House.

Not a fan, I take it. This is what I'm talking about.

I agree, but it's not just the "main stream media". It's also right wing media.

Both have a vested professional interest in keeping us separated and angry, and they're clearly winning.

The right wind media, being Fox News... IS... MSM

I talk here and elsewhere to Democrats that Obama was no liberal. Only in appearance.
He was the greatest friend to Wall Street and global corporations than any other President. It's not even close.
If you are left leaning, or a Democrat and you STILL think Obama was a good President than you are extraordinarily misinformed and should broaden your news sources.
Obama was no Democrat. He was a Globalist/Elitist to the core. And YOU were a fool to have voted for him the 2nd time.

Well, okay, but I'm including Rush, Sean, Tucker, and the various right wing sites I see here, used as "sources", from WND to Red State to Alex Jones.

So you mean trump voters

unfortunately everything trump voters support is unacceptable to progressives
And vice versa. Birds of a feather.
.
Yes, but we won the election
Yep.
,
I think its the left that is being unreasonable

America has never had 100% agreement on any policy

we debate, we vote, and the winner carries out his policy

But that changed in 2016
Mac pines for the good ole days when the republicans were cordial and compliant little capitulators, who went along to get along so they could get the softball media interviews, be invited to the cool parties, and get the good tee times.

But don't dare stand up and push back, lest you be branded an "extremist" and a "tribalist".
Hey, a day without one of you guys completely fabricating my opinion out of thin air would be like a day without sunshine!

Always a good sign.

No not a fan. I supported 90% of what Candidate Obama ran on. I supported maybe 10% of what President Obama actually did.

It's not exactly a secret that the Democratic Party has clearly moved to the Left over the last generation or two. The only people who appear to disagree with that are the Progressive (Regressive) Left - because, I assume, they merely see the party as coming more in line with their beliefs. As the party becomes less liberal and more leftist authoritarian, they become more comfortable and satisfied.

Unfortunately, many of us who lean Left are watching the party become something with which we can no longer identify, leaving us without a party. And the alternative "major" party has done its own changing, and is currently something that is becoming more and more ugly and vulgar. Personally, I don't think the increasing division is a coincidence as much as it is a reaction.

Interesting cultural & statistical analysis on this by 538: Why The Democrats Have Shifted Left Over The Last 30 Years

=====
This means that the recent uptick in the share of voters holding liberal beliefs is driven not just by the departure of conservative voters, but also by Democrats themselves becoming more liberal. It is, of course, hard to identify just one reason the Democratic Party has shifted leftward in recent years, but in my conversations with experts, they all pointed to party elites (both politicians and influential liberal voices online). Now, some research has found that cues from the parties and party elites are even shaping voters’ personal beliefs, particularly on issues of race and immigration.

But why have so many Democrats moved to the left on these issues? On the one hand, the fact that race and immigration played such a central role in the 2016 election was certainly a contributing factor. A 2018 study by Peter Enns at Cornell University found that rather than voters choosing a candidate who matched their views on controversies like the Black Lives Matter movement, they actually changed their own views to match those of their preferred candidates. And there is evidence that Trump is continuing to drive some of this — although, perhaps not in the way one might expect. There isn’t evidence, for instance, that his rhetoric has contributed to an uptick in racist and sexist attitudes among white voters; instead, as FiveThirtyEight contributor Matt Grossmann has written, “the evidence shows that liberal-leaning voters moved away from [Trump’s] views faster than conservatives moved toward them.”

=====

There are other party alternatives ya know. There's nothing that says we can only have two. In fact there is nothing at all regarding political parties in the constitution leaving one to wonder why and how we've become a nation of only two.
I would like very much for at least one more viable party to emerge as a strong alternative. But if this can't happen during a time of division like this, it may not ever.

"The System" apparently won't allow for it.
.

What system is this? I've been registered as a libertarian for several years now. Although the last time I voted for Trump and wll do so again in 2020. Trump is no more a traditional republican than I am. In fact there is much of libertarian ideals in his politics, that is the least amount of government and smallest amount of taxes as is possible.

NYS, FL, TX...
I don’t k ow what slum you live in.

I think the OP has a point, in that when Obama got elected he moved this country further to the Left than most people thought possible, and even got himself re-elected to boot. It's like, hey we can do this shit (like the ACA) and get away with it. And the Dem Party has never moved back towards the Center, and in fact the far Left is still pushing further Left with no real opposition cuz there's no leader pushing back on the socialist agenda they are pushing for.

I think here are other reasons though, like shifting demographics. Some people say by the middle of this century the largest racial segment in this country will be latino rather than caucasian, hence the move by the Dems away from pandering to white people. Which could explain the Dems' opposition to immigration and The Wall. And as the numbers leaving religion are growing over time, the Dems are opposing Christianity and Judaism.

The other thing is the Left has so much control over the media and academia. Kids growing up today and over the last 20-30 years have been increasingly indoctrinated by the liberal philosophy and socialism. Older white righties will be dying off, leaving the Left in a stronger position and with greater control in gov't. Assuming their party doesn't self-destruct first. Progressive liberalism has been around for a long time though, and I doubt it'll go away that easily.

They did not change. It is that the fringes of both parties are getting all the attention. Fuck the fringes!

To the left? You think giving health care over to wall street is moving left? Starting new wars is moving left? Furthering the wealth gap is moving left? Letting all those who broke our financial laws go unpunished is moving left? What in the world are you suggesting here?

It will be Hispanic because that is what business wants.

The Fed is pumping billions and billions into the market. That is the largest Socialist program ever devised.
