Another success story for Home Schooling

One again we see the value of home schooling in raising well rounded, articulate and socially adjusted children. More evidence of why home schools should be able to do whatever they want

The sickening danger of home-schooling

David and Louise Turpin ran a sickening school in Perris, California.

It had just six students, all of them children of the school's sole teacher (Louise) and its principal (David), and all of them held against their will — shackled, tortured, and horribly malnourished in their putrid family home, which doubled as their school and which they shared with seven former students, older offspring of the same couple, who were treated in the same appalling way.

And for the nitwits that want taxpayers to pay for these religious whack home schoolers this is the cautionary tale. There is a concrete reason you go to public school and get socialized. You get to find out what normal and healthy is and what a religious fundy hellhole is. Why David Koresh was a pedophile psychopath and not a christ-like servant.

It is beyond evil to keep children locked away from the world like that and brainwash them in a closed environment. This is what North Korea is on a gigantic scale.

maybe if progressives didn't decide schools should double as indoctrination centers people wouldn't have to resort to Private Schools/Homeschooling.
You know...public schools are the default position...they have to be everything for everyone.....If it's not for you and your kids, make other arrangements.

They are not "Default" anymore. Go to most schools and ask for a breakdown of teacher political affiliation, and see how "default" they are.

And no, I don't want to impose MY views on Public Education, what should happen is up to grade 8 or so worry about the basics, from 8-12 expand a bit more but be neutral as possible, and let them become hippy dippy lefties in college like in the old days.

I think you would be surprised at the number of conservative teachers. BTW, why do you think a school would have that kind of information?

I doubt you could get it, but I would be curious.

A student is 100 times more likely to be sexually abused in a school than by a priest.

How Christian fundamentalist homeschooling damages children

I was shocked to find so many tales of gross educational neglect. I don’t merely mean that they had received what I now view as an overly politicized education with huge gaps, for example, in American history, evolution or sexuality. Rather, what disturbed me were the many stories about homeschoolers who were barely literate when they graduated, or whose math and science education had never extended much past middle school.

Why did she stick with homeschooling for so long, despite her difficulties? “We were convinced that it would be better for our kids not to have an education than to be educated to become humanists or atheists and to reject God,” Garrison says. “We became so isolated because the Quiverfull lifestyle was so overwhelming we didn’t have time or energy for socialization. So the only people we knew were exactly like us.

A 10-year-old girl was physically abused by her mother, Anna Marie Lloyd, who also allowed the girl to be sexually abused by her brother. The girl was homeschooled.

Lloyd was a member of the Arkansas new religious movement run by Tony Alamo until shortly before it was raided in 2008. Around that time, while living in Oklahoma, Lloyd lost custody of many of her 13 children. Lloyd subsequently moved to Wisconsin, where she was living in November 2016 with her 17-year-old son, 10-year-old daughter, and a 2-year-old. The 10-year-old girl was not legally registered as a homeschooler; however her mother claimed to be homeschooling her despite the fact that she “could not read, write or count and would have used a computer program for homeschooling but did not know the password.” Lloyd frequently punched the 10-year-old and the 2-year-old in the head, and stated that she “was aware another one of her sons had sexual contact” with the girl, saying the child was “fine with it.” She also encouraged the girl to smoke marijuana.

The abuse came to light in November 2016 when the girl’s school district notified child protective services that the girl was not being legally homeschooled. Lloyd was charged with child abuse.

Young calls this lack of regulatory oversight a "massive legal loophole" permitting child abuse. He's right. In many states, parents need merely file an affidavit stipulating that they are running a school for their own children in order to ensure that the kids never interact with the wider world again. In many other states, not even this minimal registration with the government is required: Parents can simply disconnect from the broader community and do whatever they want.

Plenty of paperwork to keep, and wouldn't you think a school with 1-2 instructors and less than 10 kids would stand out as a homeschool?

So now you want the government inspecting homes? Maybe they should have inspected Woody Allen’s attic.

Public school most certainly IS the default position. You don't like it...private school or homeschool. And your comment "go to most schools and ask for a breakdown of teacher political affiliation" is a fascinating take on your desire to know way too much information about people.
Do you really think that it is appropriate for a school district to gather, file and GIVE OUT that kind of information on their employees?

Homeschool parents do not need to submit academic assessments or show evidence that they are educating their children. There is no process to ensure that their children are involved in the community, nothing to ensure that they have contact with anyone at all.

The solution is relatively easy: Force contact with mandatory reporters. States could require annual assessments by a certified teacher and annual doctor’s visits, creating at least two opportunities for a trained professional to recognize abuse.

That's a laugh. What is funny is homeshcooled kids in general do far better than their public school counterparts. But there's that intellectual honesty part that progressives all seem to have a problem with. Namely, you ain't smart, and you ain't honest.

Only because we have yet to hear about all those priests because the Catholic church hides them....school molesters get outed asap and are never hidden or moved around like the Catholic hierarchy is so willing to do.

So board up the windows, and stop vacuuming the carpets. You too could be teaching your kids the true meaning of Christmas, that coffee cups MUST have a snowflake or a candy-cane on them or they are the devil's work.

If you act now we'll send you no books! That's right, who needs books at school? Not the cool kids that's for sure. Just sit in your Home Schooler's Activity Desk or chained to a bureau and let the learning begin!

  • The home-educated typically score 15 to 30 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests. (The public school average is the 50th percentile; scores range from 1 to 99.) A 2015 study found Black homeschool students to be scoring 23 to 42 percentile points above Black public school students (Ray, 2015).
  • Homeschool students score above average on achievement tests regardless of their parents’ level of formal education or their family’s household income.
  • Whether homeschool parents were ever certified teachers is not related to their children’s academic achievement.
  • Degree of state control and regulation of homeschooling is not related to academic achievement.
  • Home-educated students typically score above average on the SAT and ACT tests that colleges consider for admissions.
  • Homeschool students are increasingly being actively recruited by colleges.

Nothing to do with homeschooling, Brown shirter.
He needs to change his name to dingbat.

Dont know about California but parents in Wa have to teach required subjects, have appropriate college credits or be supervised.
Those were some control freak sickos. Its hard to believe no one reported or seriously questioned them. The one family member "aunt" interviewed seemed almost as loopy as the parents.

Another success story for pubic education....see how this works?

‘Jason’s Girls:’ Palmetto High teacher accused of string of sexually charged relationships

In 2008, someone e-mailed the principal at Dr. Michael M. Krop High School with a serious allegation: a creative writing teacher was having sex with current and former students.

It’s unclear if the school district investigated this claim, but it’s clear what happened next: Jason Edward Meyers was allowed to move to Miami Palmetto Senior High School in 2011, where a lawsuit filed in federal court against the Miami-Dade School Board claims he continued to engage in inappropriate relationships with underage female students.

In total, the suit says, Meyers pursued sexually charged relationships with eight of his current or former students at the two schools during his 14 years as a Miami-Dade teacher. He groomed his creative writing students, encouraged them to write sexually explicit content and singled them out to such a public degree, the suit says, that they were known as “Jason’s Girls.”

‘Jason’s Girls:’ Palmetto High teacher accused of string of sexually charged relationships

That is why we have regulations on student- teacher interactions

There are no regulations on home schooling

Really? Then why are these people facing charges?
