Mostly because Trump would weaken the western alliances

How is asking them to pay their fair share for the defense we provide "weakening" them? Wouldn't they have more skin in the game and more determination if they were paying their own way?

He was operating largely unimpeded under Coolidge as head of the Commerce Department and was left to his own devices since Calvin was still morning his son's death. Coolidge never got over that. Coolidge died of a Heart Attack and Hoover took over as President. 7 months later, when Hoover released all of his ideas in force, the bottom dropped out of the Stock Market in the US and then the World. The US went from the Roaring 20s to the Great Depression in a matter of a couple of years with Hoovers guidance. Many of Trumps actions and ideas comes right out of the Hoover Playbook. If you don't learn from history you will repeat it.
