Are conservatives smarter than liberals?

Every day on this board we seem to have threads about 'how stupid are libs?', 'dimbocrats', 'typical liberal stupidity'....you know the drill.

The strange thing is, I don't see a lot of posts claiming the opposite. Some comments, sure, but I think most people will agree that there are far, far more posts labelling liberalism as being in some way stupid, a mental illness etc than there are posts about conservatism claiming the same superiority.

I don't get this at all - I see no link between political views and intelligence. I've met some brilliant socialists, a couple of brilliant fascists, and everything in between. I have met enough painfully stupid liberals and painfully stupid conservatives that I don't think either side are in too great a position to start claiming a monopoly on smarts.

Isn't claiming 'liberalism is a mental illness' the kind of Catch 22 comment that only an intellectual dwarf could assume?

Or is there a reason that some conservatives believe they are intellectually superior?

I think this post proves the point of this thread very well.

Don't be to hard on them. I am guilty of calling these asshole Republicans stupid. And of course, I can PROVE they are stupid. Hell, look at the use of language, sentence structure and the ability too make a coherent point and you start figuring out quickly that some of these Republican poster are really fucking stupid.

For example; there is a group of posters that repeatedly claim that demand for a product or service does not create jobs to fill that demand. Rabbit is the worst to make that claim but there are many others.

And that's just fucking stupid. And you can't argue, find common ground or do anything else with that level of stupidity. Except call them names. Which I do every day.

BA's in History and English, Masters in History; I taught damned near everything except math when I was teaching 6-12 in small rural schools, and I taught World and American history at a college, but, did not like working with college kids as much as working with the younger kids.

Maybe this is a good time to add that I know A LOT of very intelligent conservatives, and have nothing but respect for conservatism as a concept.

I don't see that the left wing has any intellectual advantage over the right, myself.

I'm also not sure that this board is a great example of genuine conservative thinking and ideas....!

If you truly have substance in a debate, you don't resort directly to "You are stupid!"......you simply use your substance.

When someone holds the debate "You are stupid" EVERYONE knows they lost the debate.

What is interesting is the frequency with which you hear someone say "stupid liberal" in lieu of an argument. My theory is that this is has to do with the Republican ideology of common sense, which is a window into their philosophy of life, which is based on the acceptance of facts and values without argument (-this kind of thing thrives in religious communities or cults which depend on rigid hierarchies and blind loyalty, that is, you don't want people questioning what the leaders say, so you create a worldview that cannot be challenged).

Republican "common sense" points to a kind of logic or way of being that holds things as self evident or too obvious to require argument. So when a liberal expresses different values or has a different way of organizing & dealing the world's chaotic manifold of events/data, the liberal is simply stupid or corrupt or insane for not seeing what for the Republican is simply obvious.

This kind of person - who accepts the world as pre-made and obvious (rather than a complex world that requires understanding and argument) - thrives in religious communities where they depend upon strong, charismatic leaders (who deliver the word of god). This is why Republicans are so deeply enamored of men like Limbaugh and other pundits - because these are the deities of common sense.

Ask yourself this question - Are we advancing or falling behind?
Has Liberal entitlement programs lifted the poor out of poverty or has it kept them in poverty?
Is our society breaking down or is it becoming better?
The answer is no to all three.

Social Security and Medicare have lifted MILLIONS of Americans out of poverty. Before Medicare, elderly were the most likely group to fall into poverty, after Medicare elderly are the LEAST likely to live in poverty.

Conservatives have NEVER done anything to help the poor. They loathe the poor.
