I would say because it presents a case that does not exist and provides an alternate reality.

Especially when liberty and justice for all most emphatically did not exist when the pledge was invented and does not now. Too, the nation is under several gods.

"under God" was added during the McCarthy scare/cold war time when we thought adding "under God" would be impossible for a communist to say and therefore we would pinch all them pinko commies by observing everyone say the Pledge.
And we DO stand for "liberty and justice for all," even though we are not perfect in it. The Pledge was written in 1892 as a verse and adopted by Congress as the Pledge in 1942. Liberty and justice for all had come a long way by 1942.

I recited the Pledge before class each day while I was in public school, but I'm not stupid because of it. There is nothing cult like in pledging allegiance to your country. What is wrong with it?
