Of course they are. But it is Uke land, and they are prepared to die for it. Might be a Slav thing; my Dad escaped Europe too, but from the Russians AFTER fighting with them to defeat the Nazis. The battle for Bakhmut has essentially ended with a Russian victory and control of the region.
Now it remains to be seen if the Russian army will head north and concentrate on encircling and isolating the capitol city of Kiev.
Or head south and capture the major port city of Odessa, and then continue on and annex the thin strip of land known as Transnistria, which will totally cut of Ukraine's access to the Black Sea for desperately needed food and supplies.
