A Florida sheriff’s deputy announced himself as law enforcement just before fatally shooting a Black U.S. Air Force airman inside his apartment in the state’s Panhandle, according to body camera video shown to reporters Thursday.

Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden presented the video hours after the family of Senior Airman Roger Fortson and their attorneys held a news conference in which they disputed that the deputy acted in self-defense.

The video from the deputy’s body camera showed that Fortson answered his apartment door with what appears to be handgun pointed down toward the floor. The video shows the deputy banging on the door, stepping aside, seemingly out of view of the door. Twice he shouted: “Sheriff’s office!”

The door opened, and the deputy shouted, “Step back!” The deputy then fired off shots and shouted, “Drop the gun! Drop the gun! Do not move!” The deputy then called for paramedics on his radio.

This has got to stop. There is no indication that Fortson pulled the gun on the officer, but that he was holding a gun. Just holding a gun in a state were they recently passed condtitutional carry. This is Florida, the cops will probably get away with this killing.

Why was the sheriff at Fortsons house?

So Fortson fucked up. Never answer the door with a weapon visible, no matter who's knocking.
Nope, whites have lived after holding guns and worse so there is no excuse. If Fortson had pulled the gun on the cop, I could see the shooting, but just holding a gun is not enough. Not in a state that has passed constitutional carry and the man was in his home.

But you have two sets of standards so....

That all depends on how tightly wound up the cop is that happens to knock on your door. But opening your door when the police are outside is the stupidest time to "I'm just exercising muh constitution right", no matter what color you are.

Never answer the door unless you're expecting someone. Just take a hard corner, watch, and wait. If it's the police and they don't have a warrant, they'll go away. If it's home invaders and they break through the door, then you have every right to shoot them.

Seems like he gave no warning to drop the weapon and it doesn't matter how tightly wound the cop is, there are rules.

In this case the police would have busted down the door if the guy didn't answer and rhen shoot. And it would be decared in places like this how the guy was justifiably shot for not obeying the officers commands. So let's just face the fact that this was a police murder and the cop who did it needs to go to prison.

You've probably watched too many TV shows. Cops aren't bound by law to warn someone to drop a weapon. If they do warn someone, it's because they don't want to do a bunch of paperwork afterwards.

There are plenty of videos of White guys getting killed by police like this, and those cops were not convicted.

Daniel Shaver is just one.
