The ironic part of all this is that the prospectors did little to deprive the indigenous peoples of anything. The Spanish had used their mission system to enslave most of the tribes a hundred years before the Gold Rush of 1849. The natives of California were stone-age in their cultural development and never had a chance. Yahi and Yani..Modoc and Mojave...gone. Well, gone until Indian casinos made their appearance..then many discovered a rich..very rich....California native cultural heritage.
