I haven't seen a thread yet on this, so thought I'd pass it along. Florida has REJECTED an assaults weapon ban as I knew they would, they did the right thing and voted to start arming the teachers.

It's a lot harder to fix than just saying "take the guns away!" But to think that absent guns, these kids are all going to just settle down and behave and go away and not just resort to other methods is crazier than the shootings themselves, and it has been DECADE AFTER DECADE of idiots like you IGNORING THE REAL ISSUE HERE and just saying its a "gun thing" that has allowed it to go on so long and grow to the problem it is and get so many more children slaughtered.

Most of these kids do not have mental illnesses. They may have mental disorders, which are different. A mental illness is like schizophrenia or dementia. A disorder is like BPD or ASPD.

Disorders can be treated to some extent, but they are more like an ingrained part of a person's psychology. A flaw that prevents them from fully integrating into society. You can't fully treat them or get rid of them. You can't cure mental illnesses either, as far as I'm aware, but they are much more uncommon. Few shooters had mental illnesses, but they likely were all disordered.

The key does not simply lie in any one thing, but what can be done is help boys in schools. I think a lot of this comes from a sense of hopelessness, of weakness, of feeling worthless. Boys don't get all the encouragement that girls do, and we've made the mistake of thinking they don't need any help. That's wrong, and that dysfunction in early life, combined with the male's natural tendency toward violence (a good thing until relatively recently), is creating monsters with access to powerful weapons.

But one must wonder why European countries, which surely have a similar % of disordered youth, don't put out the shooting numbers that we see in the U.S. ...

A distinction without much of a difference. Unless you told me all these kids had been studied and tested prior to or after the shootings for a diagnosis, your statements don't say too much. An "illness" is a clinical condition with severely debilitating and well-defined symptoms. A "disorder" is often nothing more than the "cocktail-of-the-week" high-functioning condition dreamed up and identified by someone as the new flavor upon which to base prescribing Ritalin or in justifying some aspect of behavior. Sheldon Cooper of The Big Bang Theory has a "disorder." But he doesn't walk into a school premeditated full of people he knows carrying a bag of guns planning to carry out a mass murder.

Disorders have been used often to justify and get people off as not being responsible for their crimes by crafty lawyers. I really don't give a flying crap what these kid's issues are, just that neither the parents, schools or their health administrators are apparently bothered to try to diagnose or detect it, and despite many calls to police and FBI by people who DID see the warning signs, the authorities apparently were loathe to deal with it.

Whatever the case, these kids are murderers, the public schools seem rather adept at cranking them out these days and it better be dealt with effectively pretty soon rather than trying to blame others and sit on their hands waiting for some white knight to come rescue them. These kids are killing people and must be dealt with in the most severe terms, and the schools and healthcare public authorities better get busy in coming up with a CAUSE, a treatment and an effective short term (school safety) and long term (better mental health) solutions. Frankly, from what I've seen of some teachers and school officials, public schools have been turned into loony, 24-7 government bureaucracies of endless and mindless rules and regulations and quite frankly, if I were a kid and had to put up with that shit all day long 5 days a week, I'd probably go off into deep end as well.

Time to get the government out of education and back into the private sector. It has been nothing but another federal total fail.

I think it's pretty reasonable for kids to not want to get shot in their classroom while the "adults" do nothing except just tell them to deal with it and hope nothing bad happens to them (because knowing something and telling someone apparently doesn't work).

It is also reasonable to believe that employing retired police and military personnel to shoot back immediately instead of waiting for the uniformed police to arrive and count the bodies will reduce the casualties in school shootings and eventually decrease the frequency of them. Schools being kept "gun free zones" will never work. Shooters are attracted to gun free zones simply because they exist.

The co-executive producer of “Dancing With the Stars” Deena Katz was brought in by the Stoneman Douglas survivors to plan the major event and has a nearly $2 million budget. The money is was raised with a “GoFundMe page, along with donations from Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and George and Amal Clooney.”

The “talent show” permit application listed equipment for the film crew’s use for the Mall as two tables, two bikes and jump ropes.

The list on the permit application for the March For Our Lives rally included 14 Jumbotrons, 2,000 chairs and 2,000 portable restrooms to be funded with part of the $2 million.

This equipment will be used by the “student speakers, musical performers, guest speakers and video tributes,” and up to an estimated 500,000 attendees, according to the permit application.

The D.C. location for March For Our Lives rally is just one of many big and small events planned in cities across the nation on the same day.
