Gun Sales Set Record for Sixth Month in a Row

‘Summer of the gun’ continues into the fall

November 4, 2015 10:30 am

The Federal Bureau of Investigation processed a record number of background checks in the month of October, indicating that gun sales were at an all time high for the sixth month in a row.

The FBI’s National Instant Background Check System processed 1,976,759 firearms related checks in October. That is a 373,290 increase in checks over last year and a new record for the month. It also makes October the sixth consecutive month to see a record number of checks.

Since every purchase of a new gun in the United States requires a background check the metric is considered a reliable proxy for how many overall gun sales there have been, even though the number does not represent a one to one calculation for gun sales. The federal government and most states do not require background checks on gun sales made between private parties. Additionally, some states request FBI background checks on their citizens who apply for gun carry permits.

So far in 2015 the FBI has performed 17,584,346 firearms related checks. Currently, 2015 is on pace to beat 2013’s record 21,09,273 checks.

Gun rights activists have pointed to Democrats’ calls for new gun control measures as one reason why gun sales have increased. Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton has said that the Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment, that Australian style mandatory gun buybacks should be considered in the United States, and that she would implement new gun control through executive action.

And Hillary come full bore

Hillary Clinton released a new ad focused on gun control Tuesday which highlights how she has changed her approach to guns since 2008.

“We’re better than this,” Clinton said in the ad. “We need to close the loopholes and support universal background checks. How many people need to die before we actually act?”

However, as Politico points out, Clinton’s new hardline position on gun control is a departure from her 2008 campaign. “Seeking to combat the perception that he is against gun control, [Bernie] Sanders has also brought up the issue on the stump — marking a shift from the 2008 presidential campaign, when Democrats did not uniformly speak out for such gun restrictions so openly,” Gabriel Debenedetti wrote in the piece. “Clinton in particular was largely silent on the issue when she ran in 2008, except when criticizing Barack Obama for what she called his “elitist” and “out of touch” comments that some Pennsylvanians are “bitter, they cling to their guns.”

When asked about the apparent change in opinion on guns by CNN’s Jake Tapper, Hillary said she had not moved her position at all. “You’ve spoke a lot, at the debate and on the stump, about further restrictions on gun ownership,” Tapper said. “I remember in 2008, during the primaries, you were positioning yourself to the right of President Obama, then-senator Obama, on this issue. You talked about respecting how guns are part of the culture. Sending out a mailer criticizing then Senator Obama for pushing tougher gun laws.”

Third thread on this Big Win by the NRA.

Once you fools have spent all the rent money on ammo you'll never use, get back under the bed where you belong.

Hillary can institute all the gun buy back programs her heart(less) desires, but that doesn't mean we're selling.

Yep, and the Jews had nothing to fear cause Adolph just wanted to move them into camps for their own protection.

Yeah, because Obama and Adolf Hitler are pretty similar, aren't they? Not.

That's like saying the blacks had something to fear from Bush. Why? Because I just made it up. Well, the Jews had nothing to fear from Adolf, did they?

320 million guns in private hands.

8,124 gun murders in 2014…..

319,991,800 guns not used to commit murder…

Guns are not the problem, criminals not being prosecuted for gun crimes is the problem.

Lol at "320 milion guns in private hands." More like "320 million guns could be fucking anywhere. Probably many being used to rob people."

it took 20 years after gun registration and confiscation in Germany before the bad guys came along and used those records to commit mass murder against unarmed people…..

It would be nice to put genocide, mass murder and ethnic cleansing on the ash heap of history…and the only way to do that is to have armed civilian populations which can fight against government mass murder….
